Spurned Blair in Plea to Bush*

Tony Blair will today attempt to restore British influence in Washington when he warns President George Bush that the Middle East "road map" remains the only viable option for achieving a lasting political settlement.

Less than 48 hours after Mr Bush spurned his plea for an "even-handed" approach to the Middle East, the prime minister will make clear in private that Britain cannot sign up to Ariel Sharon's unilateral plan which was all but endorsed by the president.

As Blairites admitted that the president's declaration marked a personal setback for the prime minister, foreign secretary Jack Straw last night underlined Britain's unease. He said: "President Bush ... has to make his own judgments. We make our own."

The prime minister, who began his two-day visit to the US last night with a meeting in New York with UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, will today put on a brave face when he says that key elements of the Sharon plan, such as the pledge to withdraw from the Gaza Strip, can be reconciled with the road map.

3. I don't know who I find more repulsive, Bush or Blair?
I think it is Blair because he doesn't have Bush's excuse of frying his brain with booze and coke.

"winners" in this deal, and the Palestenians and Iraqis are STILL being screwed.

Blair will have to answer to his own conscious aftet trusting Bush...something that seems to be coming full circle.

Ever see Monty Python and the Holy Grail? That scene where the knight is hacked to only a head and continues fighting with the challenge

"Come on, it's only a flesh wound. I'll bite your legs off"

Persistence in the face of abject humiliation. Makes you proud to be British. Keep smiling Tony, mummy loves you

14. "Welcome to DU, Philestine!"
Why thankyou. Quite a flutter.

On the subject of my PM, reckon he must be seeing the light just about now.

"I don't care if you don't like him, he's my mate and bugger to you all"

Looks like mini Bush just pooped in the afternoon tea. How unfortunate.

20. The knights that say Neee
We are no longer the knights that say "WOP"
We are now the knights that say "Regime Change"
and perhaps latterly "Ooops"

15. Poor Tony...
Too bad he can't do anything to change his 'committment'--the forceful and timely missive from our Man in Afghanistan OBL has suggested that any change would be seen as 'caving' into AQ terror threats...

Should be a lesson for any of the ally partners(Italy, Poland, Japan, etc) that might want to 'withdraw' troops or question Bush policy/sanity on Israel or a full assault on Najaf?

'In for a penny, in for a pound' as the Brits would say...

21. What the British say
Indeed, we do say "in for a penny, in for a pound"

We also say "One man's meat is another man's poison"

and "Don't put all your eggs in one basket"

Perhaps we ought to update our archaic phrases.

"Never trust a man with carpet burns on his knuckles and a Dick at his right hand"

would work quite well

16. Blair Turns Blind Eye to Differences with Bush
British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) publicly turned a blind eye to policy differences with President Bush (news - web sites) over Iraq (news - web sites) and the Middle East ahead of Friday talks with the U.S. leader in Washington.

Their meeting falls during a surge in casualties, killings and kidnappings of foreigners in Iraq and days after Bush unveiled a major policy shift in the Middle East that Blair has opposed in the past. But the British leader said the two close allies shared a common goal in Iraq, and he hoped Bush's Middle East initiative would help unblock the long-stalled peace process.

In Iraq, "obviously the common aim and purpose is what is crucial," Blair told reporters in New York after talks with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites).
