Sides gear up for Senate fight

National figures from both major political parties came to Washington yesterday to bolster their candidates in a battle for a key Senate seat and a grueling war for the White House.
Virginia Sen. George Allen, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, was in Bellevue to promote George Nethercutt, a candidate with a history of toppling well-established Democrats.
As a newcomer in 1994, Nethercutt unseated Washington's senior congressman, House Speaker Tom Foley. Now he is presidential adviser Karl Rove's pick to help the Republican Party in its bid to take Washington state.
