RICHMOND, April 16 -- Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner on Friday amended bills passed by the General Assembly that would make killing a fetus a felony and deny gay couples the legal benefits of marriage.
In altering the feticide measure, which was sponsored by Sen. Kenneth W. Stolle (R-Virginia Beach), the Democratic governor added language making clear it would not violate the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade ruling, which established a woman's right to an abortion.
And while emphasizing that he opposes same-sex marriage, Warner said he disagreed with parts of the bill sponsored by Del. Robert G. Marshall (R-Prince William) out of concern that its broad language might not pass muster in the courts.
