US soldiers launch search for killer in eastern Baghdad

BAGHDAD (AFP) - US soldiers backed by helicopters blocked part of eastern Baghdad as they hunted the killer of one of their comrades, according to an AFP correspondent.

Dozens of soldiers blocked the main entrance to the suburb of Baghdad-Jadida and called in Arabic through loudspeakers for local residents to help them find the man who they said shot a US soldier and fled into the area.

US commanders have not provided details about the shooting but a military spokesman on Tuesday said one US soldier had been killed when a convoy was attacked in the Shiite area of Sadr city, close to Baghdad-Jadida.
