Bush Paints Rosy Picture of Iraq Situation
Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 10:38 AM by Tab
WASHINGTON - President Bush on Saturday painted a rosy picture of the situation in Iraq, claiming significant progress in the U.S. military's battle in an insurgent stronghold.

In his weekly radio address, Bush applauded the assault on Fallujah, west of Baghdad. About 80 percent of the city was said to be under U.S. control, with insurgents pushed into a narrow corner. But the battle has claimed 22 American lives and wounded about 170 U.S. troops and violence has now spread to other Sunni Muslim areas of Iraq.

"Our forces have made significant progress in the last several days. They are taking back the city, clearing mosques of weapons and explosives stockpiled by insurgents and restoring order for law-abiding citizens," Bush said.

He said "support continues to grow" internationally for the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq, even though the multinational force will see some reductions in the coming months

2. while the media focuses on Scott Peterson Case
i wish the whores would report in depth and analyze what is going on with iraq and what people say about it as much as they do with things like the scott peterson case, kobe bryant, michael jackson etc.

3. This hardly qualifies as "news"
This dickwad's been saying this sort of crap since day-one. But I guess if he keeps repeating the same thing over and over again it resonates with his reactionary, Christian Reconstructionist sheep...er...Americans.

6. Should it be ignored?
Or should we see the contrast of the redeployed troops to Mosul, the uprising, the increased dead, juxtaposed with his "rosy picture"?

8. I didn't say ignore the story, but report it for what it is.
And that is propaganda. Pure and simple.

32. It's worse than lying - it's abyssmal ignorance
If you don't read newspapers,if your briefings have to be "brief" and then you probably don't read those in order to pray instead, and if, as once ** said when caught off guard, he gets his info from what he sees on TV -----it renders him abyssmally ignorant.

5. 22 American lives? It's over 50.
When you tell a lie tell a big one. Nine helocopters forced down. At least 4 tanks destroyed.

200 billion dollars gone.

US dead or seriously wounded in Iraq now tops 5,000 but the talking point of the day is things are going well.

21. Over 164 wounded were flown to Germany by Thurs
The link goes to an article from yesterday now, citing 178 total wounded but on Thursday it read (from my own LBN post at the time)...

FALLUJAH, Iraq -- U.S. forces backed by an air and artillery barrage launched a major attack Thursday into the southern half of Fallujah, trying to choke Sunni fighters in a shrinking cordon. The military estimated 600 insurgents have been killed in the offensive but said success in the city won't break Iraq's insurgency.

The Fallujah campaign has also sent a stream of American wounded to the military's main hospital in Europe. Planes carrying just over 100 bloodied and broken troops were arriving Thursday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, a day after 64 others were brought in.

And that wouldn't have counted the injuries that didn't leave Iraq.

9. We will control fallujah until we leave it. then they'll take over again.

Does no one in charge know that you can't fight insurgents with military hardware? We took fallujah what, twice before? Now we shed more american and iraqi blood for it once again.

And just who's idea was it that the insurgent rebellion is headquartered in fallujah? Did they learn nothing from nam? They are headquartered wherever they happen to be at the time.

Was it bush who said: My minds made up. Don't confuse me with facts.

14. How could anyone in this administration learn anything about VietNam?
None of these people in this administration served there. Perhaps if they had, the experience might have changed them such that they would have understood the folly of this occupation, or at least they'd have understood the planning required to win the peace.

In Bushworld, the more losses we incur, the better things seem to get.

10. Other countries see this headline too.
Other countries, especially those in the Middle East, see more accurate news than we do. They hear directly from people who have been in Iraq or are still there.

What do they think when this adminstration stands up a delivers a whitewash of a speech like this one? Do they think he's insane? Or lying? And/or that we're idiots to repeatedly accept these distortions?

I'm not watching news, but I'll wonder if ANY media outlet will analyze this speech and compare it to the little we do know about conditions in Iraq. Last night...reports of uprisings in other cities...reports of abject wretchedness in the streets with body parts and corpses...reports of the last hospital being destroyed...reports of conditions in general being described as a disaster.

Will Tim Russert tomorrow talk about what a cruel lie this speech is or the Peterson case?

I mean the press alone should have their heads examined. They sit there with this moron and print such crap.

22. More of the same.

More of the same.
Bush can't admit he made any mistakes.

And this is the guy that ~50,000,000 people thought was more capable of handling the war in Iraq?

He reminds me of the cop in the final scene of Animal House, yelling "remain calm, all is well", right before he got trampled by the mob.
