The mainstream media has made itself into the ineffective mess it is today. As much as I would LOVE to blame BushCo entirely, they have only played a role in rendering the media ineffectual.
During the past four plus years, the Bush administration has taken an adversarial – no – hostile role against the media. (Except, of course, the columnists they purchased.)
But this process took more than four years.
Way back in the 1800’s, the citizens of this country knew who the President was, and they may have even seen pictures of him. But the President wasn’t the main object of the press; rather, Congress was dominant force in American politics.
In the 20th century, the focus changed. Radio brought the Presidents’ voices into America’s living rooms. Television brought with it the Presidents’ faces. As radio and television became more prominent, the President’s role is the political role upon which the nation focused. We became concerned about his looks (the Nixon-Kennedy debate, for example), his wife (we just have to know all about the first lady, her clothes and latest hairstyle!), his family (Billy Beer?), etc. Every move the President made was under public scrutiny through the press.
