Thousands of citizens were anxiously awaiting news from their trusted leader about the future of their nation. Using a speech that overwhelmed the people with a surge of patriotism, he persuaded his followers that only their ideology should rule throughout the world and explained that “only he who is himself culturally creative can permanently maintain real cultural performance.”
I found a strange resemblance to this speech given by a famous German leader justifying his invasion of Poland when I found the transcripts of Bush’s State of the Union address and his Inauguration address. In fact, one phrase was particularly ominous, reminiscent of former leaders manipulating their ideologies to appear to be the only option for not only their nation, but also the rest of the world. Bush clearly and firmly stated, “It is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world . . . America’s influence is considerable, and we will use it confidently in freedom’s cause.”
Americans can see what type of “influence” their government is willing to use by looking at the recent war in Iraq. And several other nations are afraid that they may become the next victim in a war to bring freedom.
Iran seems to be next up on the list. In his State of the Union Address, Bush stated that “today, Iran remains the world’s primary state sponsor of terror – pursuing nuclear weapons while depriving its people of the freedom they seek and deserve.” And despite Iran’s denial of using their nuclear research for destruction, Bush’s administration has already been digging for the next catalyst for war.
