Dick Feagler
Plain Dealer Columnist

Live long enough, and things re peat themselves.

When bad things repeat themselves, the repetition can cause depression. We know that from our personal lives. It is also true of our country, which is merely a crowd of personal lives with a flag on top.

The best definition of insanity I ever heard was this: An insane person does the same thing over and over again, but expects different results.

At the old Cleveland Press back in the early '60s, I worked the dawn shift. A grouchy assistant city editor gave me an assignment...

Here's that part:

"remember that small parade on Public Square in the '60s. I saw it grow to a force that drove a president from office. I never thought I'd see anything like that again. I sure didn't want to.

But a new cast of characters is repeating the old insanity. We are mired again in a war we cannot win. We are dealing with a culture we cannot change."

A friend of mine(a retired military mid-east expert) agrees:

"they've been killing each other for over 2500 years, and no matter what happens (we stay for 40 years or pull the troops out tommorrow), they will then start killing each other for another 2500 years."

This is no noble cause, we're "forcing" democracy on a country that doesn't want it.

Edit: clarity? My words are the bottom half :)

4. Yeah, those people, always killing each other
If only they could look to European history for guidance. Bloodless, enlightened discourse has carried the day in Europe for centuries upon centuries. We would never think of fighting wars over the silly things that Arabs seem to think are worth killing for - land, religion, money.

Those silly Arabs.

2. I was a peacefreak during the Vietnam era
and I STILL am today. As frustrated as I am that we haven't learned from our mistakes, I am hopeful that all the Cindy Sheehans will reawaken our desire for peace. For the second time in my lifetime--BRING 'EM HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
