Just In Case You've Forgotten: We Told You So!

How often during the last year has someone ridiculed you, scoffed at you, belittled you or even questioned your patriotism because you had the audacity to question the wisdom of invading Iraq. Once a week? Once a day? Every freakin’ time you turned around?

Well, here we now stand, our nation stuck in the quagmire of quagmires, with no apparent way out. The casualty list keeps rising. The damage to our national reputation keeps growing. And the drain on our national treasury keeps draining. We are, in short, in the deepest of deep trouble.

And it was all so unnecessary:

Do you remember Barbara Tuchman’s "The March of Folly?" If so, you probably also recall that her definition of folly involved the strange recurring pattern by which governmental leaders throughout history have taken steps manifestly contrary to their nation's interests, despite being warned by contemporaries of the foolishness of their actions. Can anyone with an ounce of intellectual honesty doubt that the War in Iraq meets this definition?

1. Many times

On the one hand, I LOVE being right, but it makes me feel guilty when being right means a cycle of death and destruction in Iraq. At least my conscience is clear. I demonstrated against this war twice, spoke out against it when 75% supported it, including many go alongers who just can't abide being in the minority on any issue. Now it's our turn to stick our fingers in their faces and say "We told you so!"

2. Even if everything would have gone smooth as silk,

it was still wrong. It is wrong to attack other countries, destroy and seize their properties, and kill their people. Even if it goes well. It is still wrong. Particularly countries that can't even fight back. Pathetic.

3. I regularly tell Kathleen Parker I told you so

I email her about once a month asking her why she hasn't written about Iraq since her gloating post-Statue-Day column entitled "Liberation tastes like crow to the antiwar crowd"

My latest referred to the passage below, and I asked her if she still has such a high regard of Rumsfeld's maturity in light of what we now know about his petty, counterproductive infighting with Rice and Powell:

It's also hard to be humble when you're right, but guess who is both? Guess who first cautioned against glibness, hubris, immodesty and arrogance? Those mean men Dowd can never bring herself to address as adults: her Bushy, Rummy and Wolfie. The lead players in this epochal drama have spoken with the restraint and authority of grown-ups undistracted by childish antics, either from the pacifist nursery or from exuberant Iraqis tasting freedom, in some cases for the first time. "Let them rant" or "Let them loot," as the case may be, is an attitude of tolerance born of higher sights.
