White House Red-Faced Over Rove Immigration Remark

February 09, 2007

ABC News' Karen Travers Reports: White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove explained the Bush Administration's guest worker program and immigration policy at a luncheon Thursday by saying, "I don't want my 17-year-old son to have to pick tomatoes or make beds in Las Vegas."

The statement appeared on The Corner, National Review's blog, and has been gaining steam ever since.

wars of aggression.

2. A delightful albatross...
Perfect for hanging around the collective repuke neck.

For verily, this is what it is all about: a new generation of menials. I am sure some repukes have wool-gathered about the possibilities of bringing back bonded servitude.

7. Yup.
They make great 11-Bang Bangs. Where as I am sure that Sir Karl of Turdblossom does not consider his spawn, the fruit of his most virile and manly loins, suitable for such duty. Or any duty for that matter, in keeping with the Rove Dynasty's rich military traditions.

10. Absolutely. Instead of being a tomato picker or bed maker, Rove's
son is a nose picker and bed wetter.

37. I believe his son attends the Lab School.
Edited on Sat Feb-10-07 10:10 AM by CBHagman
The Lab Schools -- for they exist in several locations, from what I recall -- are excellent schools that provide special instruction and programs for kids with learning disabilities such as dyslexia. I've heard nothing but the highest praise of such institutions.

Getting back to the subject of the thread, it's not the kid's fault that he drew such a rotten father. The son must be off limits.

38. I wasn't attacking the kid (or kids I think he has two)
Just stating what I had read...

Lucky for KKKarl he has the money and resources to get his children the help they need via a private school.

Most of the working public isn't so lucky thanks to slime such as himself.

15. "Rove was not insulting those people in those jobs, the WH explained"

......Rove was speaking at a Republican women's luncheon and was talking about the President's immigration policy and the need for a system where willing workers get paired with willing employers, Perino said.

Rove talked about how there are so many vacant jobs in this country and how many of them are in low-skill, low-wage sectors of the economy.

Rove was not insulting those people in those jobs, the White House explained, he was, according to Perino, saying that every parent wants their child to have a high-skilled, high-wage job.

42. Umm...
From what I've seen at some of the facilities we have here for the 'learning challenged' and 'developmentally disabled', a low-skill job is most satisfying for a lot of the people.

It's something they can do, do well, get paid for, and feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.
I respect that...they do jobs I would NOT be able to do well and consistently.
Things like assembly, or repetitive tasks...they don't get bored and have their mind go wandering off and screw up their job.

As to making beds...I'd like to see Karl Rove spend 8 hours just 'making beds'. Then have him do it daily for at least two weeks. Doesn't sound like much, does it? But it's back-hurtin' work. You gotta move fast and get it right every single time and there's anywhere from 20 on up number of beds to be made in your shift...and that's not including the rest of the cleaning necessary.

24. My teenaged son had his first job doing hay bales at a local farm
this past summer. I think it's good for him to work tough jobs, develops a good work ethic. If he goes on to one day have a "High-skilled, High-wage job" he'll appreciate it all the more for what he has endured to get there.
I feel sorry for roves son. Hard work develops good character, he's missing out on not learning this simple lesson.

27. I live in Kansas
and have lots of friends who worked on farms in college. Unlike Rove's kid, who will just need somewhere to go for 4 years while he waits to share Daddy's money. I knew kids like that too.

Guess who are better people as adults?

40. If that was what Rove "really" meant.......
then why bring it up at all during a talk about the Administration's immigration policy? Clearly there is a connection between the two ideas: crappy jobs need to get done vs. folks like us should not have to do them.

However you spin it, Rove was saying we need immigrants to do the menial jobs in our country because people like him and his audience are too good to do them.
