Bishops Atttack "Immoral" Labour
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7801667.stm

"Labour made a lot of promises, but a lot of them have vanished into thin air," he said.

"We have not seen a raising of aspirations in the last 13 years, but instead there is a sense of hopelessness. While the rich have got richer, the poor have got poorer.

"When a big bank or car company goes bankrupt, it gets bailed out, but no one seems to be bailing out the ordinary people who are losing their jobs and seeing their savings diminished."

In a separate interview with the paper, the Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch, the Bishop of Manchester, accused Labour of being "beguiled by money" and "morally corrupt". . .

3. Interesting question
Which came first: the donors or the right-wing agenda?

5. Since when an attack on a Government IGNORING the Poor Right Wing?
This is NOT a right wing religious group, but the Church of England ATTACKING the LABOUR Party's following what the GOP has been doing in the US.

"The Rt Rev Tom Wright, the Bishop of Durham, told the Sunday Telegraph ministers had not done enough to help the poor.

"Labour made a lot of promises, but a lot of them have vanished into thin air," he said.

"We have not seen a raising of aspirations in the last 13 years, but instead there is a sense of hopelessness. While the rich have got richer, the poor have got poorer.

Now later on a comment is made on Morality, but the thrust of the Bishop's attack was on the lack of Economic care of the poor by the Government.

6. Did anyone except happyslug actually READ THE ARTICLE?
Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 10:04 AM by Lydia Leftcoast
Or did you all just read the headline and make up your own article based on your prejudices?

Yeesh!

The bishops are criticizing the Labour Party for not living up to its stated principles of favoring the working and middle class and instead favoring the moneyed classes. They're not criticizing it from a Conservative point of view but from a liberal Christian point of view.

(The old Labour Party in Britain was literally a labor union party and introduced such features of modern Britain as the National Health Service. Since the Thatcher era, Labour has been far more conservative, kind of like the DLC in the U.S.)

8. This is DU Lydia
You know that any thread with the word "bishops" in the title is going to attract the usual "OOOOOHHHH LOOK AT THE EVIL FUNDIES" crowd, regardless of the actual content.

9. Its an interesting article
But I need to re-read the article to pick apart the infighting at the end. It felt like a very light skim of deeper statements.
