Today I Became a Costco Member
Thanks to the Wall Street Journal. I'd been thinking about it for months, but when the story ran about the stock analysts who were ticked off over Costco's philosophy of treating their employees like wealth creators, it drove me over the edge.

Didn't go to heavy - got 4 hours of sleep last night and was completely overwhelmed in the warehouse, but I scored okay.

Picked up:

a set of 8 rather colorful tumblers
a 7-piece pasta bowl set

and best of all - two pound balls of fresh, hand-thrown mozzarella flown down from NY - far tastier than the Wisconsin crap (sorry WI people, you Nordic types just don't know how to make good mozz, everything else is just fine though) that gets sold in TN, and far less expensive than the Wild Oats hand-made.

5. My sister usually gives me a membership card to Sams Club
every Christmas. For this past Christmas I asked if she could change that to CostCo and told her about the worker friendly attitude of CostCo vs the money grubbers of Sams.

Both my sister and I are now proud members of CostCo and buy our toilet paper in 48 roll packages.

and their nuts, raisins and milk. Good frozen fish too. I buy a bag of Cod every two weeks. Then there's the cheap but high quality Grade A amber maple syrup. Gawd I love that place. So many good deals.

Edit: And the Coffee! How could I forget.. It's 1/3 the price and twice as good as the grocery store crap.

The big hunks of romano and cheddar were tempting, but I'm already stocked atm.

I buy my syrup at a barber shop in Manchester, VT, when I make my annual jaunt.

I think I'm going to have to entertain all the friends in the next couple of weeks so I can clear out the cupboards & fridge :)

7. Great Buys At Costco:
Look in the fresh food section, they have these salads that are really good. Greek salad and southwestern and some others -- delish and then look for the soup in the fresh section. Cream of roasted red pepper is FREAKING AWESOME. Roasted chicken is good too and the garlic roasted mashed potatoes.

Great deals on La Brea bakery bread; also I have two daughters and we all love the camisole/bra things that come in a twin pack, called French Dressing. Socks, underwear, and bras are a great deal at Costco.

It is 100% Columbian coffee. It is wonderful--the ONLY coffee I buy and drink. Try it--you won't be disappointed. It is so rich and delicious, and it is only $5.00 something for 3lbs. A great buy and so delicious!

22. I've been a member since 1991
I order birthday cakes from their bakery for my grandkids. Awesome buttercream frosting too. They sell the Kirkland brand AA batteries for $10 but you get 44 of them. They're just as good as the name brand but far cheaper. For you guys out there who want to surprise that special lady in your life, you can buy 2 dozen roses for $12.00. I buy the over the counter version of Claritin for $15, for that you get two 90 pill containers. The only problem I have is that because this big gas station chain operates across the street, the local town won't okay a members only gas station at my local Costco.

20. Costco rocks.
I spend almost nothing at the grocery store these days.

The only other place I miss is Trader Joes. They're expanding in a big way, but haven't made it to the southeast. Lots of good food, and it's cheap enough to try things you wouldn't normally try. They're privately owned, and I get the impression that they're pretty worker friendly as well, although I don't know the details.

27. I was talking to the attendant at the costco here
I was talking to the attendant at the costco here (Durham NC), and he was saying that the gas tanks and pumps are built far above what's required by the building code here. (He's a very talkative guy) Something about how the tanks can be inspected for leaks all around, and there's extra barriers to stop any leaks should they occur, and they have the same EPA vapor traps they use in California (which aren't used around here in any other stations).

Unlike Sam's, they aren't just cutting corners to get the prices down.

They have wonderful "gift" items starting in October.. Gotta shop early though.. They have the best musical snowglobes (people buy lots of tickets to get a chance at them)...they sell for less than $20.00 and they are so cute..

I usually put out around $280.00 on raffle items, and sell around $650.00 in tickets .:)

They also have the cheapest eggs and butter around..

I cancelled my Sam's club and called them to tell them why..:)

32. I ripped into the WSJ in class this week ...
Put the article up on an overhead screen in front of 150 students, and used it as a case study. We were examining why corporations are encouraged to do immoral things, and I noted that with this kind of negative reinforcement, most companies will shy away from progressive measures. (Henry Ford was also criticized for being too generous to his employees ...) It takes strong people to stick to their ideas.

I added that politicians who call for saner social and environmental policies get slammed by those same voices in the media .... Al Gore was derided as "Ozone Man", and Jerry Brown was "Governor Moonbeam".

Silence, except for 150 pens furiously scribbling. It was sweet.

Being an independent business owner, I always try to patronize locally owned businesses, but there are some things the locals don't have.

Costco's deals on feta cheese, fresh salad greens, dog beds and more are really great.

Got a DVD recorder? Their price on 10 DVD+RW (Rewritable) discs is only $21 something.

36. Costco is GREAT I just read an article from some Wall Street fuck who said
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 01:55 AM by Zinfandel
I'm paraphasing...Costco pays it's workers too well and their benefits are too "generous"...I'm thinking, does this fuck ever get out of his limo, on his way to the suburbs, and does he ever see a person of color, as he pontificates about the poor and workers?

This guy actually stated that it wasn't fair to Costco stockholders, to NOT cut workers salaries and benefits...like someone put a gun to the stockholders head and said buy Costco stock...(the whole corporate world should offer only Wal Mart wages and with no benefits and scream about a twenty-five cents minimum wage increase).

These pigs, like this guy, are all too frequent in our daily lives..we've become numbers for these corporations, to cut cost with, like chickens...no feelings, that's business...numbers that they can squeeze more from...

What happens when they can't squeeze anymore from us?
