Even newspaper captions are editorialized
From the Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff, which is usually pretty fair in its political coverage, but in this case worried about losing subscriptions to the hypernationalists with its caption for the photo below:

A protestor, known only as "Chia", stands along Humphreys St. awaiting the return of the troops from the 2220th Transportation Company of the Army National Guard. The protestors caused high tensions with the more patriotic crowds.

So "Chia" is LESS patriotic because she criticizes Bush and the war. Glad their captions set me straight - guess there was no more room on the editorial pages.

1. Feh. Makes ya crazy, doesn't it?
Of course, the captions and headlines at common dreams are slanted in my political direction. This obviously bothers me somewhat less, but it's still slanted.

4. but aren't they openly left?
I have been published at CommonDreams, and I know I wouldn't if it weren't for my views. Though they are a news site, they do not disguise their thrust. Mainstream city papers like the one above supposedly represent the broadest contingent.

I say the Daily Sun is usually fair because they run more anti-Bush editorials and cartoons than not, and the RW letters are written by the same 3 crackpots. It's a fairly Dem city, although there is that nasty streak of AZ fascism in a good chunk of the populace.

2. They could easily have said...
"...high tensions with less questioning crowds." But what does "high tensions" mean anyway? Dangerously excessive electricity, like high tension wires? Sounds like let-the-intern-write-the-slug-line-day at the Sun.

5. lol
The only tension came from the pro-war/Bush people who secretly wanted to assault those who dare disagree. You know - they hate us for our freedom of speech! ;-)

6. even worse!
I am a LIE-brul!

I am happy that the families are reunited and the guardsmen are out of harm's way. But how many of them miss the irony of an AWOL guardsman sending them there in the first place?

I can't wait for the letters to the editor on this one. Patriotism will be confused with nationalism, and opposing the war will be linked with opposing the soldiers. It's just soooo 2003.
