I LOVE...ok, let me repeat that--I LOVE AA.

But it seems like that critical comments aren't "allowed" by some posters here.

I don't know about you, but the things I LOVE I tend to be the most critical. I'm a geek. Just ask me about B5 or Dr. Who and I'll tear those shows apart...but with love, because I know what sort of heights those shows can reach. Same thing goes with AA.

Yes, there are doom and gloom people who think the whole network is doomed, but back off of attacking people who just make a critical comment or two, ok?

68. How About Low Power FM Rebroadcasts of AA?
I don't know about legality or licensing but mayby it's a way to get AA into more cities even though they only have a few stations. If enough people did this we could blanket the country with AA. And DUers in the same city could coordinate on a frequency and blanket the city mayby. Could someone post this as a topic for me cause I don't have enough posts to start a thread. Is it a workable idea? Please discuss.

78. Won't work
LP is restricted to non-commercial community and religious broadcasters.

The current LPFM rule allows for 10-100 watt broadcasting (a reach of no more than a few miles), are highly sought after, and restricted to community groups, ethnic groups, public service organizations, and local churches. In other words, not very mass appeal. And a very small (if existent) listenership.

They did come across a good idea of leasing AM stations, since there are a lot of them out there running brokered and satellite programming, and making little money doing it.

3. Anything goes; however,
as I wrote in a different thread earlier, on the other hand, some people feel protective perhaps, like a mother, of the fledgling radio station, which is just starting out in life, and feel upset at early criticism of the shows.

7. My early writing
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 09:27 PM by khephra
was geared towards movie criticism, so I'm used to being able to see whats right and wrong about something without thinking that a show is totally wrong.

I'm totally at a loss over those posters who think AA is 100% right.

Randi Rhodes bashed the quisling Nader, and AirAm has taken on proxy status for that debate.

15. To my mind, criticism of AAR
is different from criticism of movies - I would like to have suggestions for improvement to go with the criticism in the case of AAR. AAR is far from perfect, and can only get better from here. It really hasn't done too badly, technical glitches and all. A bit like an experiment is the way I think of it. It needs all our help, and even "tough love" does help.

By the way, I do write (terribly amateur) reviews of films elsewhere. I don't bother to suggest improvements when I do so, either. I just gleefully trash away.

30. AA is 100% LEFT!
 Just the way I like it! Computer software problems aside, the amount of truth being broadcast in any given hour of AA makes it A-OK in my book. I'll continue to listen to the stream until the San Francisco station goes live at which point I'll give my computer's microprocessor a rest and put it to other uses in an effort to overthrow the Bush* Administration! My children are counting on it! :)

...for posting that. Last week I posted a message about one of the AA segments that I didn't like. I was careful to be polite about it, because we have some people on DU who are as intolerant of criticism of anything liberal, as the righties are about criticism of them. Sure enough, I was told to go listen to Rush if I didn't like AA.

to kill the fledgling network. Did you see the GlobeAndMail trying to suggest the whole black community is against Air America because one pastor (who just so happens to be Republican - not that the Globe disclosed this) is working to cause AirAmerica trouble?

But they, like all right wing campaigns here, usually only last for a few weeks at best, so I'll hold my criticisms for a while until the posers leave.

I am somewhat mixed about it.

Today I listened to Randi Rhodes kissing Madeline Albright's derriere-- the same person who said that the loss of countless thousands of Iraqi children in Clinton's bombing raids was an "acceptable sacrifice"-- and vowed never to listen to the woman again. Apparently she has never met a centrist-- or right-leaning-- Democrat she does not love.

OTOH, Laura Flanders is a treasure and she had Bev Harris on tonight!

I am very glad that AA exists-- but it certainly does run the gamut of anti-Bush opinions, which is more than a little disappointing to a lefty like me.

...and it ain't easy...it burns material at a tremendous rate (Al Franken is just now facing having to come up with 15 HOURS of stuff a week!) I just look at this as a shake down cruise...give it as much support as you can, but understand that it will take months for things to start to click. I suspect that a year from now, we will look at the current Air America as Star Trek with Commander Decker. (sorry if the reference is too ancient)

The problem is certain posters can't stand to be argued with. They want to swoop in, make their intellectual pronouncements, and watch people "ooh" and "aah" over them.

In real life, however, that ain't gonna happen.

You make a statement here someone disagrees with, they're going to let you know they disagree with it.

13. Some of it is exhaustion as left-wing circular firing squads appear
We finally get left wing radio, and we see what is a dispiriting pattern: all sorts of liberals and leftists lining up to bitch, proclaim failure, revile its hosts (Rhodes is so mean towards Nader! She's a DLCer! etc), etc.

This happens very often--a progressive development occurs, and it promptly gets attacked for not appealing to faction X-sub-Y of group Z. And some of us sigh and scream and think--"crap, this is why the Republicans win so much power..."

23. Yes, Yes, YES!
"The idea is that critical comments do not = attacks."

You have just nailed it.
And THAT is exactly the problem I have with what has been
going on here lately.

Certain people at DU complain about the TPTB exercising
character assassination of anyone who criticizes GW, they
also criticize the ridiculous behavior of someone like
Sean Hannity or Bill O'really and yet they practice the
very same character assassination and revel in a AA host
who practices the very same technique as the morons
on the networks, cause she's a "librul" don't ya know.
There is no consistency in their standard. In my book
that is hypocracy and a lack of self examination and
character- if that makes me an elitist, so be it-
at least I apply the SAME measuring stick, personally and
ethically, to every situation.

and the entire radio station was bought and made into a sports channel.
Lynn Samuels was the closest thing to non- right wing - and she was fired.
Brian Lehrer is occasionally truthful on WNYC - but one day he started extolling PNAC - so I developed an intolerance.
So, for some of us it's a first, a revelation, a luxury - a sense of freedom...
I adopted a defense mode when WBAI went on the attack. Also there are some freepers on the Al Franken forum where the shows are discussed. They give me an inkling of the hatred and desperation on the right.
I guess I need some time to take it for granted like you. For now it's a beautiful gift from the gods - and I bow daily, incredulously and extatic.

for all to meld. and i like some of the suggestions i have heard on this board to fill some time. like a sharpton on sunday. need diversity, different cultures too

i have become hooked. hunched over computer all day, dragging it into kitchen when i cook. tv on mute and listening to aa. hubby gonna get mad, wink. i want it to get on radio quick so i can walk away from computer.

randi was interesting. hadnt listened to her, but had read a couple threads, especially the nadar threads. last couple days have listened to her shows. a big thumbs up. yes she gets too loud and i have to work the volume on my computer, but i listened to nadar today with randi. and i dont think the nadar fans are being objective. and in the threads i heard them pull nadars talking points too, which thought was funny listening and realizing this afternoon. nadar was playing a game. he didnt like what she was saying to him,. though a vast majority agree with her, adn i want the answer to the questions. and if he was seriously saying that all would come on his side as president, that alone tells us this man isnt presidential material. further, nadar doesnt have to deal with any of the negative of being in the race. so easy to not be challenged yet sit back and be on the ticket.

and look what happened when he was challenged

nope, i am willing to sit back and listen and see what is created. they have a lot of room for growth

a big i am excited

and constructive critism, i will certainly respect and even listen and may agree.

a problem on computer, you all have talked the advertisement too loud. a couple excited jocks are so close to the mike yet the guest are further away and more quiet, so have to have all the way up to listen to callers and guests and get blown away by randi and i think bill?........

it's exactly like randi rhodes said, which i was so surprise to hear, that it's part of the beauty of the liberal group. we are a diverse and vocal group. we are colorful and passionate. we don't follow "party line" just to conquer the world and set up a fascist state. it's our inherent beauty. we are a messy, *human*, group of people. it's wonderful!

so please, bitch and moan, it's wonderful. i was ecstatic randi told off the liberal sacred cow of ralph nader. it was something i and other liberals here were *dying* to say, and she got to say it. love it or hate it it was good radio (otherwise, why else we'd be talking about it) and shows the great range of our diversity.

listening to the chuck D radio show right now filled with intelligent hip hop and i'm just beside myself with ecstacy to hear this. imagine, i grew up on public enemy and then rap went vapid and soulless and now we get a rebirth. i think it's wonderful! each and every chaotic, challenging, antagonistic, *real* bit.

yesterday(?). I feel the same way about RR, but absolutely love her anyway. The criticism is justified, I guess, but she acts no different for a national audience than she did in WPB, where she did just fine with ratings. She changed nothing, she is just she, as you know because you've been listening for a while. Whatever she has, it works.

What most people here don't know is that there would probably have been no AA without RR. She's the one who went to Washington, talked to the right people, and convinced them that a liberal network would work. She convinced them people would listen and she proved it to them with her own success in this WPB market.

Edit: Her friendship with Bob Graham, Bob Wexler, and others, I am certain helped.

34. That's good to know-
If RR helped launch AA on the air, that is wonderful.
I mean that. There is no question we needed an alternative
voice on the airwaves.
What has disturbed me is the personal attacks on
people who don't necessarily find her technique/style
whatever, all that attractive.
I believe in adaptive and flexible assessment-
I will continue to check in on her program and try to
keep an open mind about her- obviously, MANY people like
her- so far, I have not enjoyed her approach- I should
be able to express that without being ATTACKED on a personal
level. Dissent is democratic.
I think THAT is the issue K was addressing on this thread.
Thanks for sharing more about RR with me. I appreciate
knowing that about her, and I am grateful that have
the option of listening to other programming when she
annoys me.

36. Interesting, Fla Granny!
I didn't know of her proactive efforts - but I did realize that she was the only living proof that there is a liberal audience.
I also pay attention to the way the RNC media ignores her.
As a Drafter, Clark supporter - I know they reserve that treatment for their most effective oponents.
I did like her talk with Nader. She spoke her point of view (which also happens to be the one shared by most of us writing the madman). His answer only revealed his insanity ("a choice for millions of people" "I'll help Democrats take congress"). It was good radio. I love Randi.

Washington talking this idea up. She doesn't get much credit because she's relatively unknown (compared to Frankin, etc.). Clear Channel, because of the threats of Limbaugh, has not allowed her syndication. It is telling that Clear Channel still broadcasts her locally in WPB - she earns them MONEY!

44. I knew about her from DU posters
But I had never heard her before- my browser is fairly
inoperative...I can't get Guy James either... : (
I tuned in excited to hear her for the first time the other day,
but I was sorely disappointed. I found her extremely shrill and
resorting to bullying tactic. Not exactly setting us aside form the
thing we criticize in her right wing counter parts.
Many have expressed that they feel we need to be as brutish
as they are- that it is high time we fought back, that the technique
was "good marketing" as far as radio. I guess the latter is what disturbs me the
most. The fact that we, as a people can only relate, identify and
utilize elements of the lowest common denominator as far as
our humanity goes. I do not think those armed with truth need to shout-
I am an ardent fan of Thich Nat Han, the buddist monk, Martin Luther King.
and Ghandi- none of whom ever shouted, but none the less
moved mountains of social change with nothing more than intelligence
and the courage to speak the truth clearly.
I find it depressing that we now lower our natures to "entertainment
standards" to achieve our mutual goals which are for the good

57. Soft voices don't get attention.
I'm afraid Americans aren't into soft voices and meditative experiences. People want discussion that gets them worked up.

The only person I heard her bully was Nader, and I'm sorry to tell you (because I think that's your main problem with her), she said exactly what I wanted to say to him. He has ME extremely angry too.

I'm a gentle person at heart, but I've decided that turning the other cheek does not work with the kind of people we're dealing with. The time is long past that we can stand meekly by while they trample us into the dirt.

I'm sorry they have made us into a coarser society, but they have. Politeness no longer works. They see it as weakness and acquiescence.

60. No, it wasn't Nadar-
I am mad as hell at him too-
It is more the sad realization that you refer to-
we are an ignorant and coarse people.
That is the norm and I find it extremely depressing.
Why do they hate us?
Just look at what we value.
BTW:
I always enjoy your posts and thoughts-

I don't consider Randi coarse, though. ;-) As I mentioned in another thread, she reminds me of friends and their families that I grew up with. I know some people right now that are the same. They yell at one another and a minute later are calling each other "dear." How can I describe them? Uninhibited, I guess. You won't find this kind of personality having trouble expressing feelings.

75. Taking MLK's name in vain again?
I am an ardent fan of Thich Nat Han, the buddist monk, Martin Luther King. and Ghandi- none of whom ever shouted, but none the less
moved mountains of social change with nothing more than intelligence
and the courage to speak the truth clearly.

Have you ever listened to MLK say "I HAVE BEEN TO THE MOUNTAINTOP!!" or "LET FREEDOM RING!!"??

MLK was a preacher. He shouted ALL the time. He also spoke approvingly of "righteous anger"

81. Oh yeah- BIG similarities
You know you are right- The similarities in Randi Rhodes
and MLK are stunning.
You could almost mistake them for the same person, eh?

For the record- I have the entire library of King.
I would not classify the volume of his voice with shouting.
Nor would I classify him in the same category as RR.
Thank goodness.

32. after three days on the air...it's real scum who attack, criticise and
thereby, encouraging others to tune it out with a 'little' sniping campaign, and sneaky whispering crap that SMELLS HORRIBLE....

seems there's lots of people here who could care less about those who STAND UP against WAR....and STAND UP for the TRUTH....

these are the same ones who attack the returning Pro-Peace people, as they come home from the streets....the same ones who attack the sponsors of Pro-Peace people...the same ones who attack any attempt by BRAVE AMERICANS to STAND UP against bush* and his minions....

it's real crap to see these attacks here on DU....oh, be sure to add a little 'I love AA' before spewing it out...just so we can watch those hiding behind hypocrisy....

I'm all for Air America...it's GREAT radio...the BEST I've ever heard....no criticism here at all...ONLY THREE DAYS on the air, and already GREAT....CONGRATULATIONS to all people working hard on bringing DEMOCRACY back to America...and helping us take our country back...I can think of no higher calling...

By expressing ANY criticism of ANY AA programming
there is now a conspiratorial movement to get
people NOT to listen?
If so, read the1st amendment again.
If practicing free speech (including criticism) now equals conspiracy
we are in deep shit and become the thing we fear.

WHAT is this new blight on DU?
This rabid attack on anyone who expresses
any form of dissent against the popular concensus?
What is particularly interesting to note is the fact that
they are behaving in PRECISELY the manner they critique
in the RABID RIGHT!
Is that bizzare or what?

when Cynthia McKinney was mentioned? Do you people remember when Crossfire was our voice? Covered by shouting, missing most attacks, but somehow - a voice? So much so that Cheney had to half it and move it into a dead spot?
Could we use a bit of perspective?

58. I love it too...
but everything has it's faults, and constructive criticism is more important than fawning adulation.

Here, as everywhere else, there are a few people who don't get the point, or just like to argue about anything they can get their little claws into.

And, of course, there is that contingent who will take AAR, or any other subject they can hang onto, to vent their on their own issues or fight their own wars no matter how irrelevant.

And those who just plain like to stir shit.

Yeah, I heard Randi jump all over Nader, and was taken aback a bit. I also hear her as a leftie Hannity sometimes. But, so what? That's her style, and it got her to #1 around the Palm Beach area, and Clear Channel still loves her for the bucks. She's a pro with great radio instincts and puts on one hell of a show. This is a problem?

And, that Nader thing-- how many of us have wanted to scream that at him ourselves? Nader groupies just have to suck it up this time-- she pissed off what, a whole dozen people?

Franken has to get it together. He's not the greatest radio persona, but he's learning that you can't have a second of dead air unless it's for a reason. He's got great guests, and a sidekick that knows how to jump in to keep things moving. He just has to stop thinking and hesitating and he'll be OK. It ain't easy to do that, though, and he's got a lot of work to get out of personal appearance and TV mode that uses the gestures, looks, and bits of business he's good at.

The rest of them I haven't listened to enough to comment on.

But, what the hell, some people around here complain about everything, and some don't want to hear complaining about anything. Kinda like Real Life that way, I suppose.

77. "to vent their on their own issues or fight their own wars" - Bingo!
There are some who are hiding behind supposedly "well-intentioned constructive criticism", but they are really pushing their own issues like Nader or civility. Instead of acknowledging that the world is not the way they want it to be, they are attacking our side because we are not perfect.

And when they are criticized, they claim they are being censored even as they continue posting their "constructive" criticisms. Constructive like "AA is going to fail"

64. Dunno, in theory all comments should be.
Everyone here has their own agenda, good or bad. My personal beef is with the people who post that AA is doomed to fail. Give AA a month or three before claiming the Fall of Air America. I think that some liberals have become so used to the doom & gloom of these past few years that it saturates everything in their lives...even an obvious good.

My problem with AA is that it uses Real Player! Ugh! :(

65. I think that most of us think to be Critical of AA is to give Right Winger
More ammo..Dont get me wrong I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Air America. And to be honest I really don't have anything bad to say about it..BUT one would fear that if a big Brew-ha-ha broke out about Air America that O'Reilly, Savage would blast on the air waves.."LOOK they hate it too!..WE TOLD YOU it would fail! " That would be a nightmare to me to hear those words from them.
Sure Air America is a bit rough around the edges. And and most of us want it to succeed and show the U.S. that Lib talk radio is a success and is profitable. We know there is a market for us.
Sure constructive criticism is never a bad thing and I'm sure Air America would enjoy hearing our feedback.
I look at it as my litte dose of sanity on the airwaves and I want it to pick up more stations. Perhaps critical feedback would help it to reach that goal faster.
But for now this poster enjoys Air America very much and thanks god that its on the air.

Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 08:54 AM by harper
But I dunno...maybe it would have been nice to wait, oh I don't know, a millisecond before starting to carp about AA's faults. But we didn't wait, did we? I saw critical threads on its FIRST DAY of broadcasting. Talk about circular firing squads.

And we wonder why we aren't winning the big races. We are the minority party because we enjoy eating our own. And then we whine about how we only criticize the things we love. But you know what, the damage has been done.

There are shows on AA I enjoy more that others. But I personally plan on giving them a month to settle in before I pass any judgment.

Do you mean that your critical comments are getting deleted by the admin? No? Do you mean that "certain posters" are being critical of your critical comments? Seems that's part of what DU is all about. Is it not? If "critical posters" are attacking you personally, then alert the admin on the post. They will delete it.

In other words, you can criticize all you want, but anyone has the right to dispute your criticism.

What I see, now as in the presidential primaries, is that folks want to criticize WITHOUT their criticizm being criticized.
