What was your first "Oh-oh" moment in the Bush Admin? |
|
Given the fact that most of us were very worried about the damage he could do before the selection, we probably expected Dubya to do something obnoxious very quickly after he took office. I doubt that we knew just HOW MUCH damage he could do. He's even surprised me in how much damage he has done in such a short period of time.
But what was your first clue? What was the first thing he did that gave you a hint of how terrible his administration would be?
Mine first "Oh-oh" moment was when I learned that he classified all Presidential papers going back to Reagan. It meant to me that he was going to hide and control information and take that first, giant step toward fascism.
What was yours?

I was astounded they would try to run such a boob. It was alarmingly scary in fact. Here in NY I kept saying: ' "Hillary vs. Lazio" is just a side show. The really scary thing is Bush- this asshole actually has a chance at getting elected.'
It is still astounding that he made it in there.

the SCOTUS decision was the most crooked, illegal thing I'd ever heard of! They stated right out that it was to save Shrub from losing the election! It was like getting kicked in the stomach! How can I ever forget that and "move on?"
Also, on his first day in office he cancelled the international birth control info program. It was like he slapped all women as his first official act as president. I've been braced for a sh*tstorm ever since, and I haven't been disppointed.

of the White House - where a group of our people gave him the proper reception ;-) Then he promptly gave a proclamation establishing that day (or Sunday?) as "Day of Thanksgiving and prayers" then promptly froze funds from clinics for women in poor countries. I knew of "Jesus Day" in Texas - now I had the confirmation of a developing teocracy.

...in 2000 - everything else after that was, while utterly appalling and disgusting - was still expected. I figured whatever he could destroy, he would. Whatever issues faced this nation, he'd exacerbate them (economy, terrorism/national security, healthcare, environment - you name it...)
He is as I expected, and then some. There really was no 'uh-oh' moment, but there were a LOT of "I TOLD you so" moments...thousands - I've lost count of those!
One thing an idiot repuke is: predictable - not that they EVER cease to disgust, apall and amaze but they do so predictably.

Post-inauguration: While he did innumerable things in the first days to upset me, the first thing to affect me personally was when he thumbed his nose at visiting South Korean president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Kim Dae-jung, setting the stage for the molehill-to-mountain growth of North Korea as an Axis of Evil rogue nation.

I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer (I had a baby at the time) so I went to bed around 9 or 10pm. I woke up at 4am, turned on CNN, and went "uh oh."
Hell, it may have been even earlier, when I first heard that the grinning, kill-happy dauphin was going to run for president. We Texans who keep up with things knew a loooonnnnng time ago what a disaster this boy was. Everything he touches turns to shit, and his daddy and daddy's friends always come along with the shovels. The fertilizer he left in his wake in Texas was bad enough, we sure did hate to see that happen on a nationwide scale. BUT EVERYONE KNOWS THAT WE TEXANS ARE JUST STUPID ASSHOLES, RIGHT? No one would listen.

I kept thinking, "what's he doing? Why's he saying that?" This was back when it looked like we'd just find the weapons of mass destruction and go to war and it wouldn't be that controversial. I just kept thinking it was weird, he didn't need to act like a loose cannon and piss everyone off. I'm pretty moderate and I wasn't much against him until about the beginning of 2003 - now I think his administration is so dangerous.

...before this administration even came into power. It was when I saw footage of him being interviewed by a reported who asked Bush if he knew the name of the president/prime minister (I think) of a particular country (I don't remember which one) and Bush replied quite arrogantly, "No. Do you?" And then, of course, there was that whole "fuzzy math" business in the debate with Al Gore. He might as well have looked into the camera and said, "This guy's a lot smarter than all of us. He's too smart for his own good. Vote for me. I'm as dumb as you." I was--and still am--horrified at the thought of this man being President.

53. The day after his "acceptance speech" before the TX legislature |
|
I watched his speech and was delighted because he looked like the frightened fraud he truly is. His eyes darted nervously back and forth from teleprompter to teleprompter except for when he would look briefly ahead and say a line, then he'd start the pingpong match again. I thought when it was covered in the news the next day everyone would see this and know what a dunce we have taking the office of president.
The next morning, however, I watched the news and was shocked to find that the video was heavily edited, i.e., they would should Bush for a couple seconds when he was looking straight ahead then cut away to show someone listening to him, then cut back when he was looking forward again, etc.
I knew then that the mainstream media were working with (for?) the new regime to pass this clown off. Little did I know to what extent this level of propagandizing was true.
