Poll question: If the draft is reinstated, would you defy it or help your child defy it? |
|
Let's face it. The D word is coming back strong. I am very disappointed that certain Democrats want to bring back this government sanctioned slavery. I would like to know how many of you young men (and why not women?) would go to great lengths to defy the draft. How about you parents and grandparents with draft age or near draft age kids. Would you be bold to get your kids out of the draft?

the shape of my child's conscience, and support their decision.
This is the tack I have taken with my 18 year old, who has decided he will serve if drafted. My 15 year old feels otherwise. I will support them both.

2. you should add "i don't know" |

i think that's a very legitimate answer here
also "government sanctioned slavery" is very questionable, especially when you compare it to *actual* slavery; not to mention, saying that really inserts bias into your poll

3. I am just expressing my own opinion. |

You are holding somebody against their will and making them do something they would otherwise not want to . Though if somebody wants to get drafted, then okay but I do not think this idea of conscription is a very good one except for dire emergencies like if the U.S. itself was to be invaded. I am no paficist but I am seeing something that is becoming just like Vietnam. Why would anybody want to get drafted for that fiasco???

4. ok, by your own admission |
|
drafts can be ok "for dire emergencies." this is clearly very different from actual slavery, which is not ok under any circumstances.
also, it's not quite as clear as you make it--there are conscientious objectors, for instance.
and lord knows i agree with you about *wanting* to get drafted--my reasons for being ambivalent about the draft are political ones, not personal ones.

I am 35 and even if they did want me, I would be useless. Why would they want some fat broken down horse. No. I am glad I am not young anymore. Not now!

If you are opposed to war, even supporting the concept of a war -- The Quakers and Amish, then you are exempted and should be. But if you say "I can't personally kill anyone." Then you could be a supply clerk or a mechanic back in the states. Not saying that's the best way to do something, but they could.

I think an I Don't Know is a legitimate question. I already served and am personally not in favor of the draft. But for many people, I think this would be difficult to answer, unless actually faced with the question. Kind of like, many people are in favor of the death penalty until they get on the jury and have to decide. Plus, I would have to know the circumstances of the draft. If we were bombed by another country, then yes, I am wholeheartedly in favor of a draft (like WW II). But just to have a draft...no.

For a cause that I believe was morally bankrupt from the very start.
And conscription is about as close to slavery as one can get, without actually being clapped into irons.
Drafts should be reserved strictly for national defense. No one should ever be conscripted to fight in a war of aggression.

I would not support a draft. This is a war of aggression and personal gain. But that being said ,I would support some sort of mandatory goverment service that was not military oriented unless the person wanted it to be.And I think the service should apply to girls as well.

Not if I didn't want to be stopped at the border. Just a thought.
I am opposed to the return of the draft just as I am opposed to recruiting high school boys, and I will continue to work for my point of view. I am thankful every day that my son and daughter didn't act on their first (and noble) impulse to join the military on September 12, 2001, but decided to wait and see what developed. I will continue to work for better treatment of our soldiers, wounded, and vets. And I will continue to work to vote Bush the hell out of the White House.
