I'm guessing Condi is going to "apologize" tomorrow. Then Bush later. |
|
Not for anything in particular, mind you. But since Clarke has broken the ground, and everyone knows Condi has looked extremely mean-spirited in her attacks on Clarke, and since Clarke has come out smelling like a rose so far, she has to try to put a nice face back on the admin. She has to take a softer tone re 9-11 in the face of the families' vocal opposition. Of course, the spin that they "REALLY DID do everything they could do" will be as hard as ever.
It'll be the typical Bush-Admin taking up the flag after the fact.
It'll be a "trickle-up" apology, which means less and less as it moves up the chain of command. Just like the "trickle-up" claim of "responsibility" for the 16-words in the SOTU. By the time it got to Bush, it meant absolutely nothing.
Clarke did it first, which was very meaningful. Rice will do it tomorrow. Eventually, Bush will "apologize" in his usual flippant way. Something like "Sure, I apologize to the families who lost loved ones. I don't know what we could have done differently, but it happened when I was president. So in a certain sense, I'm responsible for everything that happens when I'm president."
Which will mean, of course, absolutely nothing.
Except that when more hard evidence comes out that he was negligent in the deaths of 3000 American people, conservative pundits will scream "Whaddya want! He already apologized!!"

4. You may be right. But that's why I think they'll say something like... |
|
... "in a certain sense" or "in the sense that I'm the man at the top, I take responsibility for what happens in the nation."
Something non-committal enough to SOUND like an apology, without really being one.
From Bush, at least. I wouldn't be surprised if they're throwing Coindi to the wolves. If things get too bad, SHE is the one who's going to take the fall, not Cheney. If they asked her to committ ritual suicide in the front of the commission, I think she'd do it.

15. Why would you think that? |

... "in a certain sense" or "in the sense that I'm the man at the top, I take responsibility for what happens in the nation."
The administration has not apologized for anything to date. Why would anyone imagine they would begin now? If anything, they will say that Clarke should have spoken only for himself if he sees himself personally as a failure, but should never have said anything to the effect that the country failed.
I believe at one point during his administration President Clinton apologized to men who had been used to test the effects of syphillis. Of course he could do that because the abuse didn't happen during his administration, although some of the men themselves were still living. But when has the U.S. ever apologized for anything in any way that could make any real difference to the people who were harmed by its acts?
Some, maybe the majority of Americans, seem to think that if you apologize for anything it somehow opens you up to some sort of weakness. Heaven forbid we should seem honest!

6. Did she say "we are all sorry"? Then I guess she's already done it. |
|
How soon after that quote was the "but..."?

12. The "apology" will be one of those criminal defendant type |
|
speeches. Such as , I'm sorry that everyone is sad, blah blah blah. I'm sorry the Clinton Administration dropped the ball, blah blah blah. I'm sorry that the mean old unpatriotic demorats who are helping the enemy have prevented wonderful Bush from stopping 911. You know that is what will be said. So get your barf bags out.

13. Neither CondiLIESa nor the administration will accept any responsibility |
|
They will be "sorry that it happened," but try to portray the situation in a "what could we do? we get a million threats a day..." light.
Now that the cat is out of the bag on the administration knowing that terrorists in our country were planning on hijacking an airliner, I want to see her wiggle her way out of the question: "and specifically what policies or directives were made to prevent or mitigate this problem?"
But I think we'll just be observers to yet another well-rehearsed whitewash.
If BushCo wins in November they'll get their trifecta

shameless BushCo/PNAC whores. They have sold their souls for money and power, and there is no remorse or sense of personal responsibility in any of them. They are all about blaming others for their actions, and taking credit for things they have not accomplished. It will be interesting to hear her spin tomorrow, particularly in light of the latest revelations about the clear warnings the misadministration received specifically about commercial aircraft being used to target buildings in the US.
Anyone know if that agent who called Condi's assertion that 'there was no way we could have known' statement an 'outrageous lie' is going to be questioned by the commission? Can't remember her name, sorry.

16. CONDI WILL NOT TESTIFY TOMORROW!!!!! |
|
My guess is that with the escalation of events in Iraq, the administration is going to create some horrid diversion in order to take attention away from ALL CONDI ALL DAY and have their media lackeys cover whatever is going on in Iraq. My guess is that the administration is going to claim that Condi is needed at work due to the troubles and will not have time to take to the commission!
