A friend, Dan Luethje, was with them and out of costume. Luethje, a bartender at the Millennium Hotel, was celebrating his 29th b-day.

BASEBALL INTERRUPTUS: Missouri Republicans Peter Kinder and Catherine Hanaway showed up at Busch for opening day to work the crowds on behalf of their campaigns. Hanaway, now speaker of the House, is running for secretary of state; Kinder, the Senate president pro tem, is seeking the lieutenant governor's job. Neither got an audience with President Bush. Nor would they get to see the ballgame through nine innings. Both said they had to get back to Jefferson City to conduct the people's business. Kinder recalled having the same conflict last year, though as he was driving back to Jeff, he heard announcer Mike Shannon tell listeners that he was in the crowd. "I felt like Woody Allen in 'Zelig' - you know the man who is everywhere.

1. Just like his dad was booed in 92.

I was at the MLB all star game in San Diego in 92, and bush sr. came out to throw out the first pitch. The funny thing was, they must have known he was going to get booed, because they sent him out with Ted Williams. They introduced Ted first. Of course everyone gave a huge cheer to Ted, and then they gave a quick "and the president of the United States, george bush", and this HUGE wave of booing started.

Of course on the recap on the news later they dubbed out the boos and inserted cheers....
