BACK AT BUSCH: A somewhat hostile crowd complained mightily about the problems the presidential motorcade caused with regular fans trying to get into the park. A Cards employee tipped moi that the team was so concerned about Bush being booed that they piped in fake applause when he strode out to the mound. Lamping flatly denied it. ... Keen observers noted that Lou Brock was sporting a new Chia Pet hairstyle, even though when last seen, he appeared to be balding. In the Cards alumni lineup, Brock, Bob Gibson, Ozzie Smith, Red Schoendienst and Stan the Man were front and center. Bush stopped and shook hands with Musial, who tops everybody's all-time favorite list. ... Bush stood at the mound for barely a moment - talk about a quick release, the ball seemed to be out of his hands almost as soon as it was in - when Joe Buck grabbed him for a one-on-one moment. Sitting in the third row up from the field, mom Carole Buck beamed. Cardinals team owners Drew Baur, Fred Hanser and Bill DeWitt appeared in their box about the same time Bush took the field. One onlooker quipped that the owners had been upstairs writing checks. ... Sitting behind home plate was Mizzou athletics director Mike Alden with Jack
Donovan, head of Fox Sports Net's local operations. ... An attention-getting trio of super heroes roamed the stadium. They included Superwoman (aka Bess Puvathingal, a Special School District teacher), Spiderman (aka Doug Garrett, an investment banker from University City) and Batman (Jon Milde, an IT consultant from Soulard). A friend, Dan Luethje, was with them and out of costume. Luethje, a bartender at the Millennium Hotel, was celebrating his 29th b-day.

BASEBALL INTERRUPTUS: Missouri Republicans Peter Kinder and Catherine Hanaway showed up at Busch for opening day to work the crowds on behalf of their campaigns. Hanaway, now speaker of the House, is running for secretary of state; Kinder, the Senate president pro tem, is seeking the lieutenant governor's job. Neither got an audience with President Bush. Nor would they get to see the ballgame through nine innings. Both said they had to get back to Jefferson City to conduct the people's business. Kinder recalled having the same conflict last year, though as he was driving back to Jeff, he heard announcer Mike Shannon tell listeners that he was in the crowd. "I felt like Woody Allen in 'Zelig' - you know the man who is everywhere.
