An old woman just expressed outrage over my listening to Air America.
It's a slow day at work, so I was sitting in the parking lot in my delivery vehicle. I had the windows down and Air America tuned in.

An elderly customer came out of the drugstore and walked over to the car next to mine. As Randi Rhodes' dulcet tones crackled through the static of my radio, the old woman turned to me and, with a disgusted look on her wrinkled face, asked, "What in the world are you listening to?"

"Air America," I replied.

"What's Air America?"

"It's a new radio network for liberals and progressives."

Her gray eyebrows rose perceptibly. "The liberals have a radio network?"

"They sure do."

She shook her head. "I never thought I'd see the day...."

With that, she got into her car and left.

3. Why would you advocate violence against someone
because they don't agree with you?

Where in my original message did I advocate violence against anyone? Are you sure you're in the right thread?

Old ladies being terrorized by people who listen to liberal radio. What a hooligan he must be.

4. I wouldn't call that outrage
more like mild disgust. But heh, if it changes her worldview that we progressives can get our shit together long enough to have our own network, so much the better.

on the Earth destroying.

You should have advised her to get herself a "pine box".

27. PROG 1, I like the pine box comment
}( Many seniors are not kindly, benevolent souls. They cast a blind eye toward racism, injustice and yes, the Vietnam War in their day.

Here someone is minding his business, in his vehicle and she struts her old ass carcass over to put in her unwanted, unsolicited worthless two cents?! Hey, I'm over 50 and I say: Screw her. She deserves the pine box ... comment and then some.

I'm sick of playing nice with people who inject themselves into other people's business or countries or affairs ... because it's their way or the highway.

12. It doesn't sound like she is expressing much outrage.
I mean if she would have said something like "turn that off, it's awful", or said "that's disgusting", or something along those lines, it still would not have been that bad. I mean come on... Telling some random old person to find a pine box after they say a few innocent statements without expressing their opinion of something as enthusiastically as you would like them too? Jeez if I did not know any better I would think I accidentally clicked on a free republic thread here....

19. the original poster did not fill in the story with descriptions of
the woman's demeanor as she said that... no descriptions of facial expressions, if she slammed her door with a scowly look on her face, etc.

I tend to believe that her reaction was one of disgust and outrage--he was there, we were not.

16. Well technically...
You must remember the deal with anyone who lived through the 50's. Whenever I hear anyone over 70 talk about what the problems of the country are its always The communists are here etc etc And they can't see a qualitive gradiations in the staccato movement towards the center.

I'll bet her mother and father took advantage of every liberal social program that came down the pik back in the 1930's.

22. Oh really?
My 78-year-old mother WAS a Communist! So was my dad, who was born in 1917 and would be having a cow if he knew what was going on today. In the 50s-- McCarthy era-- they and their friends were persecuted by the government for their left-wing views. And I know a helluva lot of people over 70 who are very progressive-- in fact, they've given their whole lives to social justice!

23. Well
I didn't mean that everyone was caught up in it. I mean those now who speak out tend to have a distorted view of liberalism. Just like certain older people that lived through the depression, tend to be more frugal.

crowd are the highest group of Democratic voters.
I hope I get old!!

Oh, my mom and dad got in trouble too. They wanted to start a co-op grocery store for university students back in the early 50's. They were labeled Communists.

28. I've heard a lot of people say it
It applies to almost every aspect. Have you never heard anyone say "things were different when i was growing up"? "We left our doors unlocked" "Things were better then" A lot of ww2 veterans still have issues with Japan, not all but some. Remember cointelpro and all the anti-liberalism had an effect. Why do you think LIberal is a bad word now? since the 60's. Of course not all elderly people think like that but some. I listen to washington journal every morning and at least 3 times a week, an elderly person calls in, saying islam is a problem, but what are we going to do about communism, because it isn't dead. How many old rascists from the jim crow south, could really change? Of course some did, in fact a few did, but a lot were so caught up in the zeitgeist, that they became set in there ways. So those who opposed the left then tend to have that same view now, at least I can say so from my experiance, if that helps.
