I want my wedge issue

I'm starting to feel like I'm missing the boat. I mean, I'm a minority, Asian, and I've got some issues too.

For starters, the popularity of William Hung. I could become outraged at the popularity of him, how eagerly America and DU are eating him up, even though he reinforces the ineffectual, sexless Asian male stereotype. I could point out how people are laughing AT him, not WITH him, and how, if he were the white American Idol failure, he wouldn't be getting this attention.

Or, I could take the muted, arguably non-existent outrage on DU last year about a US Representative's comment that Japanese-Americans deserved to be put into internment camps as proof of an anti-Asian bias on DU. Or how nobody really cared when Abercrombie & Fitch sold t-shirts with ugly Asian stereotypes, or that they practice discriminatory hiring against Asians.

How about I get indignant over the fact there is no Asian representation on Air America, and that this has to be proof of a "liberal plantation mentality," a Rush-favored phrase recently repeated here on DU?

Where's MY wedge issue? Where's MY personal reason to accuse other DUers of being racist or insensitive to MY needs?

Oh, nevermind, I found it. It was underneath some thick skin, Condi Rice's testimony and the rubble of an Iraqi mosque.

as an asian woman. maybe it will get better, but i'm not holding my breath. i think there is growing undercurrent in this country to propogate more discrimination and racism.

then again i can say, that is not at all how hubby and i so embrace and enjoy william. i dont see sexless, and i am not laughing at him or even with him, i am having a huge smile on my face for him purely putting himself out in front of every one. and his sweetness. not a bad thing. i just think he is precious.
