I think Louis Freeh was planning to throw everthing back into her face right or wrong and create a spectacle. Smart move on her part--IMO.

Anything she could have said could be labeled conflict of interest (and, of course, subsequently become fodder for spinning by the right). This was the appropriate thing to do. She was in the meetings with Freeh.
Notice however, that Zelikow (sp?) did not recuse himself from serving on the Committee. There have been many threads on this.
