Is ending the Iraq war essentially up to us (the people)? |
|
Seems like the Vietnam war ended because so many people were so fed up with it. Soldiers were refusing to fight. People were constantly protesting.
We've talked about how they don't show much of the killed/wounded Americans because if they did more people would be against the War.
What will it take?
Are we waiting for Bush/Cheney/Rumfeld/Rice to end it?
How long will we wait?

1. Is it? I'm afraid so. It takes lies to start a war. . . |
|
it takes the truth to end it.

2. We should end it when the job gets done |
|
This is the position of both major candidates as well as that of most experts.

3. The job is done: we got Saddam, and the Bathists are out of power. |

5. Do you really believe Bush*? |
|
He's the one who is saying that we went to get Saddam. The rest of us think we went there for the oil.

11. I assume your post is tongue-in-cheek |
|
The 'job' will be done once the mechanism for freedom and democracy are in place. We cannot risk letting those people become subjects of another dictator. We have a long way to go.

4. I think if we REALLY wanted to give Iraq their freedom |
|
we would leave.
I suppose both major parties (and experts - like Kissinger) were for continuing on with the Vietnam War before the people essentially revolted.

8. What "job" do you mean? |
|
When their oil is safely in our hands?
When we've established permanent military bases there?
What goal do you have in mind?

I can't believe I am really having to spell out the obvious. If we do the job right, we can have another strong free partner like Germany and Japan.

Your post #11 is EXACTLY the same argument for Vietnam.
EXACTLY.
Word for word.
I was there, and I remember it well.
As I said, many of us are not so gullible now.

1) The military has enough ready volunteers. I help by paying enough taxes to feed a small state. and 2) You can make the case that we should have been allowed to do Viet Nam right like we were allowed to Germany and Japan. If you were truly there, one might suspect you should have come to that realization.
Thanks.

22. No, I wouldn't "come to that realization" |
|
I abhor imperialism, and am ashamed that my country has decided it wants to rule the world.
There is NO "right way" to do that.
And, you're wrong about enough volunteers. It's in all the papers.

21. I can't believe that anybody can say, with a straight face, that ... |
|
our motives are pure when: (1) we are busy preparing to hand over "authority" to a governing body we ourselves picked; and (2) we are busily building a 4000 person capacity "embassy" there, despite the fact that no legitimate government yet exists to invite us to stay.
The "another free partner" argument is new to me: just how many different war horses do you pro-war folks intend to trot out to justify this mess?

9. "share the burden with other countries" |

Having people from other countries die, so fewer Americans die is a really bogus answer to the problem.

15. opportunity / glass half full - etc... |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 03:53 PM by Ysabel
seems to me that now is really the time to do it - while we still can - before the window of opportunity shuts on us - before all the jobs are out-sourced - i doubt they (the corporations) are prepared or financially set enough at the moment to do that entirely - not quite yet - but that's definitely the direction they are going...
good luck too - sorry to hear about your lay off - i hope that you're eating alright - and have shelter, etc...
a work walk out - would take a bit of planning - i think that people ought to think about stocking up on food to hold over for (a short time - i don't think that it would take very long to shut the system down really - uh oh - maybe i better be careful - i'll bet they don't like reading about this sort of thing - eh heh) - also - we would want to keep a few places up and running - hospitals for example...

edit - typo...

not in the least. This administration cares nothing for the will of the people - it considers the anti-invasion folks a "focus group".

20. No, Bush took us there with the compliance of a congress that would |
|
have us believe they had the wool pulled over their eyes
We know that is not the truth either
We the people have been "played"
The war will not end in Iraq with the election of Kerry to the throne.
Bush, will go down in infamy as a war criminal and he will deny it forever and forever and there will still be his sycophants who will defend him as a "visionary" and a wonderful and strong leader. Amonst those will be the media pundits who are looking our for themselves.
and Bush will most likely suceed in glossing it over for the history books.
No one is willing to call him on his lies now, and no one will call him on his despicable lies after he falls. No matter how many thousands of people die. Bush will insist he is the greatest and he is, as we know, a miserable man and a miserable, evil failure.
