Newspaper Won't Run This Week's Doonesbury - Too VIOLENT
The Journal-Advocate has chosen not to publish this week's Doonesbury in the paper because of the graphic, violent battlefield depictions of Iraq in this week's installment.

We will resume printing Doonesbury in the paper when the content is deemed suitable for publication in the Journal-Advocate.

4. Wow.
I am shocked. Not suitable for publication????

There wasn't anything graphic in the first three strips - today you could see that B.D. had lost the bottom part of his leg. It was wrapped in a bandage - no blood/gore.

Did they drop Get Fuzzy this week too?

17. Absolutely unbelievable, isn't it?
The neocons cynically use war as an instrument of policy then their tame media ban anything approaching a realistic portrayal.

War is dirty, messy and painful and it kills and maims people. The more people know about that, the better their judgements on their government will be.

Darbey Conley and Garry Trudeau put their "legitimate" journalist colleagues to shame.

Because it is highly political. If it still runs on the comics pages, I can see this week's strip generating complaints.

I'm just so glad he lived. I've rarely agreed with him, but we've known B.D. a long, long time.

The most moving thing to me was the removal of his helmet. That's the first time he has EVER been depicted without a helmet, going back to the very first frame of the first strip.

One of the marks of successful fiction is when characters inspire genuine and appropriate emotions in the reader. Doonesbury is by that measure extremely successful.

It ain't suitable for publication but it's a suitable endeavor to engage in...it's suitable to send kids to engage in more...it's suitable enough to give a lying cheating AWOL coward the power to wage it against anyone he chooses. Hell, what's not suitable? Sounds like a proud tradition to me. Just ask that battle weary war hero John O'Niell.

55. That was in November, 1976...
...and was far from the only time Doonesbury has been "pulled."

Just before the 1980 election, Trudeau had a week worth of strips showing an imaginary TV special, "In Search of Reagan's Brain." It got dropped by a lot of newspapers. Also, in the early 80s, many papers censored his parody of the "Silent Scream" anti-abortion "documentary." Sometime around 1985, there was similar suppressing of a week's worth of strips on Frank Sinatra and his ties to the Mafia.

Because once they start seeing this information and realizing that not everything is coming up roses in Iraq, the American people might question the media about why it hasn't been showing these concerns and instead has been serving as Karl Rove's megaphone.

I don't agree. While the theme is heavy, it's a comic! Kids see things 100 times more graphic and violent portrayed on t.v. daily.. even if all they watched were commercials and promos for movies. No, it's not that. It's the political nature of it. I'm waiting to hear that Get Fuzzy will be pulled any minute now...

38. this is not the first time a cartoon was pulled for content
and wont be the last.

On friday BD is going to swear. "son of a bitch" which trudeau thinks is tame for what some people would say when they found out their leg was missing.

And this is a punch in the gut for a lot of people. Remember that a large part of this country can ignore death violence and slaughter until it happens to someone they know.

BD is someone a lot of people have "known" from childhood. This will make it personal for a lot of people who have been avoiding it...

and yes there will be complaints. Todays comic made me grind my teeth. I hope people get the message rather than shoot the messenger.

and yes I agree explaining it to your kids will be hard.

39. There's a difference here
Liek when that Doonesbury in the 70s got pulled because he referred to a hippie receiving "a mountain of Turkish hashish" as reward or somesuch.

Bad taste is one thing. Cussing (severe) is one thing.

This is strictly a political move. There is nothing wrong with that strip. Nothing offensive expect to the Pravda that this is a Clean War.

Yes, strips have been pulled before, sometimes especially since the Bloodless Coup of 2000, it has been strictly political.

This is worse. My opinion.

37. Let me get this straight
Big boom-booms and flashy explosions as Baghdad's buildings implode are A-OK with the news hos. Clean explosions and distant destruction are acceptable. In fact, they're just the right backdrop for gushy USA! USA! USA! commentary from the slack-jawed newsreaders of all political stripe.

In fact, it's even cool for NPR to run some mouthbreather whining, actually whining, for the "shock and awe" to get going so we can all be suitably shocked and awed at the destruction of a country that didn't attack us.

But GOD FORBID that anything less than clanking, glittering techno-war be shown, even in the squeaky-clean arena of the comics.

Un-FUCKING-believable.

59. I emailed my dissatisfaction with their decision:
<<I read that you are not going to print the current Doonesbury comics, the ones depicting the amputation of the leg of one of the main characters. Shame on you. Do provincial editors, such as yourself, really think that turning a blind eye to the graphic reality of the Iraq war will make it become more palatable? If I look back into your recent archives, will I find much more graphic images under the guise of "news"? Our forefathers must be turning in their graves right now, when they see the sorry condition of our "free media" (aka corporate controlled advertising vehicles). I find it so highly ironic that REAL soldiers and journalists are losing their lives and their limbs to supposedly fight for Iraqi's freedoms... when are own are slowly being whittled away. Of course, the GOP controls the Iraqi media too, right now. >>
