You only have to deal with Bush for another seven months. As long as you can survive that, there's no penalty for defiance.

9. Who gives a shit?
I'm celebrating the fact that these countries are finally standing up to this Poseur-in-chief, and are saying, "no"!!!!!!!

At best, this coalition is nothing but token symbolism anyway.

6. Even better
Portugal is now the fourth member of the "coalition " to state it is withdrawing. Spain, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Portugal.

I expect a few of the Slavic Nations to do so as well.

12. Good on ya, fellow Poles!
I think their president finally admitted Poland was "taken for a ride" with Bush's WMD argument.

Amid Defections, Poland Vows To Keep Forces In Iraq

Excerpt:

WARSAW, Poland -- Amid defections by other coalition partners, leaders in Poland say Polish forces will remain in Iraq, despite earlier comments from the outgoing prime minister that hinted otherwise.

A Polish government spokesman told The Associated Press that Poland isn't considering a troop pullout from Iraq -- and will stay until the country is "stabilized."

Earlier, a Polish news agency quoted outgoing Prime Minister Leszek Miller as saying that Spain's decision to withdraw troops couldn't be ignored.

The comment suggested that Poland may have been having doubts about leading the peacekeeping mission in south-central Iraq amid a sharp rise in coalition casualties in April.

16. Didn't they give them some fighter
planes and a bunch of money when they signed on as partners. I'm remembering something like that but don't have time to dig up a link. Anyone else recall.

For the most part, it was a coalition of the bribed anyway. How many billions did we offer that one ME country to use it as a staging area for the Iraqi invasion. The "leaders" there were ready to take it until the protesters filled the streets.

20. The newly elected president
Got elected becaue of public indignation about Iraq. I know I am of Rusyn extraction, but I have family involved with local government in both Poland and Slovakia (we have out own gripe as we have been promised an autonomous region since World War I), and from what I hear, the people are not happy about taking part in this debacle (having been invaded and torn to pieces on a nuumber of occasion, it is a sensitive issue).Eventually the new president will have to bow to public pressure. THe same may happen in the Ukraine.

I doubt if the withdrawal of 300 Dominicans is a big deal to them.

The vast amount of troops over there are US troops.

And of course, as always, Chimpy is in complete denial.

U.S. Says Iraq Coalition Is Not Crumbling

By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House insisted on Wednesday the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq (news - web sites) was strong despite comments from staunch ally Poland that it may join three other nations in withdrawing troops.

On a day when at least 68 people died in suicide car bombings in southern Iraq, the Bush administration faced questions as to whether enough money was being allocated to fund U.S. military operations this year in Iraq.

Spain's decision a week ago to withdraw its 1,400 troops has triggered second thoughts among the original 34-nation coalition in Iraq. Honduras and the Dominican Republic have said they also are withdrawing troops.

Thailand said on Tuesday it will withdraw its 451 medical and engineering troops from Iraq if they are attacked.

And on Wednesday, Poland said it was reviewing its position in Iraq but would not pull troops out suddenly or without Washington's approval. Poland has been a key U.S. ally in Iraq.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said there have been "very strong statements of support" from nations like Britain, Poland, Japan, Italy, Portugal and others.

13. it is not the number of troops being withdrawn
it's the idea of support - ANY kind of support - being withdrawn.

17. Not the worst news for them, though.
it's not good news for our troops

I guess every person helps, but these troops that are getting ready to leave are not that many.

The rest of the world is getting more afraid of being with the US than of being against the US. That's probably bad news for all of us in the short run, but it could be good news in the long run. We may need a force from outside to finally wake us up and force us to become a responsible member of the community of nations. Let's hope that our pride and arrogance doesn't get in the way of our taking heed of the message.
