"It(SUV) doesn't belong to me...it belongs to my family"...oh lord
CNN just had a bit of fun with that comment.
Kerry, please stop trying to be the perfect candidate. You only end up making a fool of yourself.
Now, if CNN could play the same games with dubya's endless string of mind-contorting quotes.

1. He blew it on that one....
Hannity just read a quote of him in Michigan bragging about the American cars his family owns and one of them is a Chevy Suburban. Then he comes out and tries to disown it.

I think your asessment is right, he's trying to be perfect and he needs to just be himself and deal with these things as they come up.

It just highlights the problem when he does this darn it!

6. Geeeezz
It's not like Kerry was thumping his chest about owning a Prius or something. He drives big ass American cars that get 20 to 25 mpg. Big deal.

13. You missed my point...
I personally don't care what he drives, he just needs to be prepared to deal with these questions better instead of contradicting himself and putting blood in the water for the sharks.

that it gets closer to 15, 20 at the most.

Some SUV's get 25, not that one.

But hey - I'm all for going after Bush*'s gaffes.

33. Given his height, he needs a car that can accommodate him.
I'm a 5'10" woman and cannot use many cars because the ceiling is too low or the seat won't go far enough back (especially when I'm wearing heels).

And a Chevy Suburban is terrific for big people! And for towing a boat. And for carrying lots of toys.

2. The home in Idaho is a Heinz family home.
It belongs to them. Kerry is probably and understandably sensitive about claiming anything that clearly belongs to his stepkids.

On one of those new Chevy Equinoxes (car-based compact SUV)..real fast!:eyes:

This is a little bit too much like the "I voted against it before I voted for it" thing for me. JK needs to get his stories straight, and leave all the bumbling...and the fibbin'...to Dub!x(

5. Its like the "I voted for it before I voted against it"
Which, if you're well versed in the workings of the Senate, one will understand is a reasonable statement to make. But since most americans, and certainly almost no repukes, are it was a lame lame lame tieing of one's tounge.....

14. Now you iunderstand why he's guarding every word!
I wasn't at the rally where he made the no famous "I voted for it before...." statement. But I'd bet that the rest of the sentence included the reason why he voted against it. You opposition will take short exerptsfrom a statement and make them into an ad.

I know we all just want him to just say what he thinks, but remember what that did to Howard Dean!

I was against the $87B too, and my sone is in the military! Not because I don't want to fund the military, but because I knew this FAST money wasn't going to be spent well. I even called my Rep. and Sen. to ask them to find out just what they were going to spend this $$ on.

As it turns out....I was right, and so was Kerry! It wasn't spent on the right things now, was it?

7. Really?
You'd almost think that he and his wife were no longer married. He seems to try to *seperate* himself from her and her actions often (and she often seems to do the same with him) - at least with the quotes I've seen attributed to them (like her taxes not being released, and now this).

I agree, he's trying to be too perfect and appeal to *everyone* and if he's not careful, it's really going to come back and bite him in the back.

20. I Understand That
My ex-wife was a professional, we didn't agree on everything like this, and what she did was her own. I would not have legislated the kind of car she could buy.

It's even more true because Kerry and his wife married late and had established families. It's his wife's family, but it's really not entirely his family. If my current girlfriend and I get married, it will be the same way -- she does things I wouldn't do, but I can't tell her how to run her life.

I know this is an election, but I think Kerry is trying to avoid the straitjacket that political families are often placed in. The results are written all over Laura Bush's face. Kerry doesn't want to, and by marrying a rich and independent woman, has made it difficult even if he did want to.

Yeah, why is it that
CNN and the other media whores NEVER EVER seem to focus on Shrub's gazillions of verbal fuck-ups, distortions and contortions, and his total stupidity when his hand isn't be held by one of his handlers. That press conference alone should have been enough to show most Americans just how dumb and illiterate and ill-suited he really is, but you NEVER hear that from the media whores.

I'm so sick of that, their focusing on EVERY LITTLE THING a Dem does or says, and totally ignoring Shrub's never-ending stream of stupidity.

11. Is the car registered in his name?
His "family" consists of mostly adults. Just whose car is it? Technically, maybe it isn't "his" car, but it is pretty awkward to have to explain it, and it plays right into his enemies' hands.

12. Judy Woodruff/Impersonator/News Diva?
I could have screamed when Judy Woodruff lowered her voice (to sound like a man?) and read Kerry's response about his not having an SUV.

That remark was sandwiched between stories on Teresa's not releasing her tax returns, the 9/11 Commission and requests for Gorelick's resignation, a cheap shot at Planned Parenthood's website, and stroking some right-to-lifer about how cute fetuses are in sonograms. How about the women who are too poor to have sonograms? Or the ones who are victims of rape and incest? I'm fuming.

I'm writing another email to CNN.

18. yep a clear gaffe
but it happens and it will happen. Just have to make sure that Bush's gaffes get equal play.

Frankly the big knocks on Kerry are:

1.) His *first* purple heart was given because his war wound wasnt serious enough
2.) he owns an SUV
3.) The catholic church wont give him the eucharist because he supports the rights of women.

Bush's current problems:

1.) Shitty economy with no jobs
2.) War over a false reason (whether he lied or not, there are no WMD) which is rapidly going from bad to worse]
3.) Questions abotu what he was doing prior to 9/11
4.) $700 million in misappropriated funds
5.) Indictments coming eventually over the Plame affair
6.) He just spent nearly $100 million over the first few months of the election cycle and had virtually no impact whatsoever on his numbers

I think I'd rather have Kerry's problems

29. Bu$h supporting "Veterans" are spreading lies about Kerry.
"People" claiming to have served with Kerry are spreading unsubstantiated (and unsubstantiable) information about Kerry's military service via email and word of mouth. Of course, no one has actually met these "people" in person. I heard a real whopper the other night, and don't care to repeat it. The guy got the info via email. After he told me this information, I wondered how anyone could be stupid enough to believe anything like that. Of course, this same person thought that Iraq was responsible for 9/11.

I think this type of tactic may be coming directly from Rove and the RNC. Freepers are generally ignorant and gullible, and tend to believe and spread any rumor that supports their "beliefs", no matter how silly, and regardless of the source. The problem is, when this info gets to Joe sixpack the swing voter, he does not check sources. So this made up information may become "common knowledge" among the ignorant.

23. But that isn't going to happen
We cannot control the media. This is going to be repeat of the "Gore lies" scenario. Dubya will be able to tell whoppers to his heart's content. Everything Kerry says will be quoted out of context and twisted against him.

There's nothing specifically wrong with driving an SUV. All he has to say is "I go camping" - assuming he does go camping.

He needs to rise above this piddling stuff and attack Bush and Republicans.

"I wanted to buy a more fuel-efficient vehicle, but Republicans killed off all the research into fuel-efficiency" - again, assuming that's true.

19. in other words he tried to be accurate...
Only in the US would we consider a politican trying to be accurate a gaffe. It didn';t strike me as a waffle or an attempt to get out of something like "I didn't inhale" or "depends on what the meaning of 'is' is" but if it's his family's (ie stepkids) and not his then he was being accurate.

26. I think you missed it entirely
He told an audience in Detroit that it was his.

He told an audience on Earth Day that it was his family's.

He's trying to be accurate now that it fits his purpose, but he didn't care to leave an inaccurate impression when that fit his purpose.

Sort of makes me glad we nominated a seasoned pro instead of some amateur who's contantly putting his foot in it.

I know! That's sour grapes, but he's gotta stop trying to be all things to all people. Makes him look like a spineless fool.

Why does Kerry have to parse these statements in a manner that makes him look like he has something to hide. Sure, admitting that you own a SUV on Earth Day is somewhat embarrassing, but he could have honestly answered the question without sounding like Clinton. I am beginning to think that Kerry is just not ready for prime time.
