Usually the traditional concept is that an incumbent who is ahead can stay royally above the fray and indeed pretend their opponent does not exist, the "Rose Garden" strategy, pimping lots of "morning in America" commercials and "are you better off now than you were 4 years ago?"
I half suspect that shrubco would campaign in much the same way as they are, because it's Rove's M.O., and because it's suited to the kind of people and personalities involved. Interesting speculation, anyway.

You can trash people,cheat,lie,scare everybody and so on.I guess they get a lot of pleasure out of it,just like a serial killer.
