WHOA
Just got this email from a reader:

"I am a huge George W. Bush supporter. I have donated 100’s of thousands of dollars to his causes. I have always admired his integrity, and sincerity. I am a “Clinton hater’. I find you to be a brilliant man, and a great writer. Do you really think Bush intentionally lied? Do you think the Niger thing is really a big deal? I too, am very uncomfortable with the status of things in Iraq."

He read this:

Wow.

but it seems counterproductive to promote a book any freeper would die rather than see anyone read. I think it's him. He. Himself. Whatever. :)

Nothing can sink a journalist's fortunes as fast as getting snookered by a phony web persona. Please be careful. Handle it like any other piece of fanmail.

7. The Polls Are Reflecting This As Well.
Deliberately presenting false evidence and lying to the nation and to the gathered members of Congress and Supreme Court in a Constitutionally mandated State of the Union address in order to stroke the fears and passions of the public to make an unprecedented pre-emptive war is troubling even rightwingers.

This is the greatest crime in the history of our Nation. No hypoerbole. It rises higher than any governmental criminal activity since the inception of the republic.

Bush must be impeached.

11. My response
Thanks so much for writing. I will tell you what I believe, and what I have researched. You should know a couple of things about me first.

I am not telling you anything because I see personal gain in it. I believe what I tell you because I have researched it deeply, talked to tons of people in the know. I have done my homework, and I can tell you that it disgusts me. I'm not even what you'd call a super-lefty; there is no ideological axe to grind for me.

So that's that. Two things I want you to read. One is an interview I did with a 27-year CIA veteran who has been on this Niger thing for a while now:

http://truthout.org/docs_03/062603B.shtml

The other is an article I wrote before the war. The tone is strident, but the data is rock-solid. At your request, I will forward you a pack of supporting data and you can draw your own conclusions:

http://www.truthout.org/docs_03/022803A.shtml

That second one sounds like a damned Robert Ludlum novel. Check out www.newamericancentury.org and read the signatories page. Then keep reading.

I don't consider Bush a Republican in the truest sense of the word. My grandfather was a Republican, and he was the smartest and most honorable man I have ever known in my life. He taught me to think.

Bush and these boys are something else entirely. Decide for yourself, and please write back if you want to talk more.

Yours,

William Rivers Pitt

21. I like this tack, Will
I think this should be one of talking points as we reach out to scared masses--George Bush is NOT CONSERVATIVE. Goldwater was conservative. Teddy Roosevelt was conservative. He's NOT REPUBLICAN. Lincoln was Republican. Eisenhower was Republican.

He's a crook. His is the ideology of the mob boss: what's in it for me and mine.

13. The article was great
and you should be getting a lot of positive feedback on it, but Will, I'm sure you've already thought of this, but be careful. What makes me suspicious is the qualifer statement: "donated 100’s of thousands of dollars to his causes" - is that to impress you so much that you'll fall for it, and write back to him? If you do, please be careful. They are running scared and will stop at nothing to stop you and anyone else in their way.

BTW, my son sent this article out to his friends on the net to read - trying to get them politically aware/active (another reason for the other side to stop someone like you, who reach/teach hundreds of thousands).

They mistake stupidity for honesty. They don't know better. They don't post on DU.

Maybe this guy just got an eyeful, though. We'll see.

Death knows no political affiliation, and a bloody lie is a bloody lie is a bloody lie. The time has come for Congress to fulfill their constitutional duties in this matter, to defend the nation and the soldiers who live and die in her service. The definition of 'is' has flown right out the window. This 'is' a crime. George W. Bush lied to the people, and lied to Congress. There are a lot of people dead because of it.

One Congresswoman, Democratic Representative Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, released a statement on July 8 that cuts right to the heart of the matter:

"After months of denials, President Bush has finally admitted that he misled the American public during his State of the Union address when he claimed that Iraq attempted to purchase uranium in Africa. That is why we need an independent commission to determine the veracity of the other so-called evidence used to convince the American people that war with Iraq was unavoidable.

"It is not enough for the White House to issue a statement saying that President Bush should not have used that piece of intelligence in his State of the Union address at a time when he was trying to convince the American people that invading Iraq was in our national security interests. Did the president know then what he says he only knows now? If not, why not, since that information was available at the highest level.

"What else did the Bush Administration lie about? What other faulty information did Administration officials, including President Bush, tell the American people and the world? Did the Bush Administration knowingly deceive us and manufacture intelligence in order to build public support for the invasion of Iraq? Did Iraq really pose an imminent threat to our nation? These questions must be answered. The American people deserve to know the full truth."

who has had to, and still must, win a hoard of mistaken-thinking people over to better ways:

Looks like Will Pitt taught another one. Thanks for an uplifting post (and I'm sure that if we really knew the numbers, we'd all have lost count of your "graduated students" by now, Will)
