For secession fans: A modest proposal (no baby-eating involved).

I happen to think it would be a genuinely good thing if we did break up the USA. I don't think it will happen in my lifetime, but one thing's sure: it will never happen if we don't begin the process.

I think we dems should begin to identify ourselves as citizens of the Democratic States of America (or DSA), even if we live in red states.

But to the main reason for my post:

There has been a Vermont secession movement for years (I'll see if I can find the website). What state would be more likely to be allowed to leave than VT? If VT leaves, then others would be able to more easily leave. And before you know it, we've got ourselves a DSA.

So continue to fill up VT with hippies, socialists, gays and other "undesirables". And they'll be glad to lose VT.

Anyone have any other ideas on how we can push the concept of a Democratic States of America closer to realization?

I realize this is a bit out there for some. But that's what brainstorming is all about.

3. Well, the Libertarians have been trying to do this for years.
The "Free State Project", I believe it's called.

Interesting. Now Democrats and Libertarians are nearly on equal footing? We only lost by a couple of percentage points. Things will go to hell in the next four years, and no one will elect a Republican in 2008.

It may be a little early yet for secession.

4. A Republican President saved the union in 1860.
How appropriate that Lincoln's antithesis (who happens to be a Republican, but not a liberal like Lincoln was) would push it to the brink once again.
