How Long Before this Christian Right Shit Comes to an End???? |
|
The Repukes were so brilliant and cleaver in manipulating the winger Holy Rollers to grab a real gob of power. But there are problems.
In this consumer-driven economy, holiness is next to economic death!! Corporate America needs sex and sleaze and sex and violence, and sex and booze and sex and cigarettes and some more sex in order to "sex up their products" and sell them. They need sex and violence to get people to watch the programs or buy the magazine so they can hype the crap they are selling. And a society that says you should spend half your time in church is not good for any industry except the Bible printers. That's when people stop thinking of material goods and eating out and theme parks and bigger-bigger houses (gasp---how unAmerican)and give to the Church instead.
After days of spouting that "moral values" took the day in the election, I see many media whores are amending that to state that only 22% cited that as a reason while 38% combined were voting because of Iraq or terrorism. And, now they are hyping "trouble for Bush in his own ranks". I think they suddenly realized "moral values" (are you ready for some football and locker room nudity)could blow this crawling economy right back into the dark ages.

8. Speaking of the "rapture"--now there is competition |
|
Wish I had my Time Magazine in front of me. Apparently the Wingers have been feeding for several years off of a series of books by some asshole about the "rapture" but now there is competition in their ranks. Another winger person is now starting to write books saying this is wrong and going with the analysis (as has often been done) about the "rapture" only referring to one of the Roman Emperors (Calligualla -sp?-I believe) and that their interpretation of the 'rapture' is totally wrong, etc. AND this dude is selling more books than the other one ever started out doing for his first book of his series. If their "rapture" get ruptured in their brain, stand back because these people are going to unravel and stop following certain preachermen!!!!

16. Presbyterians and Other Calvinists |
|
are postmillenialists and have always been against the idea of the rapture. And I agree with them.
The only way to make sense of the New Testament, in my view, is believing that all that apocalyptic stuff had to do with the Romans and the destruction of Jerusalem.
"But the sun never turned to blood, so the prophecies were not fulfilled," evangelicals say. Well, the book of Isaiah has similar language to describe very ordinary military conquests. Even if you believe in the divine inspiration of the Bible, there's no reason to go in for all this end of world stuff.
And the church used to take this view pretty universally up until a few hundred years ago. This rapture stuff is a strictly modern form of madness.

|
In other words, there ain't no millenium. Of the three approaches (pre-, post-, and a-), I think that makes the most sense. And where did I learn such? At the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville KY -- of course, that was almost 30 years ago, before the fundies took over!

I was skipping over amillenialism just to simplify. Post- and a-mil are similar to each other in their reading of the Bible.
There are just a few passages that postmil people interpret to mean that the church will prosper and most people will eventually become Christian:
--The part of Revelation where the dragon is bound and the saints reign with Christ for a thousand years (the millennium). --The vision of Daniel in which the statue is brought down by a rock not made with human hands that grew into a mountain that filled the whole earth. --Jesus' parable about the grain of mustard seed (meaning the Kingdom of Heaven) that grows to become one of the largest plants. --Jesus' commandment after his resurrection to make disciples of all nations.
Those passages sound more like postmil than amil, but it's a matter of degree. Some people think the world has been Christian enough for centuries to fulfill those prophecies. But they sound nothing like premil -- that's all defeatism, damnation, and antiChrist until Jesus magically comes down and rescues everyone. It leads to a remarkably different view of the world.
The strange thing is that Dominionists -- at least the first ones -- tended to be premil or amil Calvinists. It really doesn't jive with the evangelical view of the world, but I guess people don't notice that.

If the data from the exit polls is correct then Kerry won the election. Since the Republican excuse is the exit polls were flawed, doesn’t this also mean the same polls that showed voters chose bush because of his moral values is flawed also? You can't have it both ways, if you contend Bush actually won then the exit polls mean nothing.

they get to have their cake and eat it too.
the fundies get to freak out at the excesses of society while the pukes remove all forms of regulation leading to pure capitalist Darwinism.
society continues to degrade as a result of their underhanded economics and the fundies become more inflamed. the pukes simply lay the blame for immoral acts on the liberals and the media and continue their divide and conquer strategy.

America view of sex vs. violence is completely backwards. A bare woman's back is considered a symptom of moral decline but a President who launched a pre-emptive strike based of fake info is considered a hero for 51% of the voting public. What to do?

14. You're overlooking one important thing... |
|
Edited on Tue Nov-23-04 05:04 PM by Harvey Korman
These people are hypocrites.
They'll watch as much reality TV and Girls Gone Wild, and play as many violent videogames, and visit as many porn websites as anyone else--probably more than anyone else. They just won't talk about it. And in Flatearthville, not talking about it is the same as it not existing. To them, 1-900-O'Reilly's big mistake was getting caught.
Plus, realize that their values are warped and have NOTHING to do with actual morality. Hence, as long as they follow certain arbitrary rules to preserve the patriarchy ("Don't be queer or destroy a future Christian Soldier") they can let teen pregnancy rates soar and their divorce rates go through the roof and allow people to live without enough to eat. And more babies means more SPENDING! More spending. And more believers! Gotta keep filling the ranks, you know.
So none of this nonsense has anything but a positive impact on consumerism. The Bah-ble and "Fear Factor" and fast food and Walmart and Skinemax can all live together in harmony. It's the (new) American way!

I can't explain this enough. There is no trend here.
Who wouldn't pick moral values as the one of the most important aspects of their life??? I would! But my values are different than many others. There's no unified christian front here! We're still discussing issues in the framework the republicans have set up for us! Stop doing that! We have more morality in our policy than they do - and we know it.
STOP. STOP. STOP.

To the best of my knowledge 100% of the dry counties and cities voted for Bush. Those who rail against the "evils of alcoholism" vote overwhelmingly Republican. Reagan forced those states with a drinking age limit under 21 to up it. It is no coincidence that MADD came to power during the Reagan administration.
Ever been solicited to give money to MADD? If, like me, you have not, ever wonder why? It is one of the largest political activist groups in the United States, someone must be paying their way. Actually it is no secret. They receive almost all of their funding from insurance companies. Thanks to MADD's demonization of "demon rum" the insurance companies charging drunk drivers 1000% more for insurance is welcomed as another form of punishment. And every time Republicans lower the BAC, the insurance companies are granted a whole new group of potential high-rate customers. This is also how the state's pay those holiday weekend crack downs. The overtime is paid for by the insurance companies making our police de facto mercenaries.
And yet, the "beer drinkers and hell raisers" are convinced that the Democrats are the ones trying to curtail their lifestyle. They'd rather have a drink with an (alegedly) teetotaler than a war vet.
And it's not just the good ol' boys either. Open Secrets shows National Beer Wholesalers as the 13th top contributor this year with most of it going to Republicans despite the damage Religious Conservatives have done repeatedly to their bottom line.
Will it take nationwide prohibition to make these idiots realize they are supporting their very enemies?

You're right, the minions of Mammon and the minions of Ba'al -and then, those of Moloch, too (the warmongers)- are hardly the best of friends. Give 'em enough knives and vanish off the scene, don't give them a common enemy to preoccupy themselves with, and the outcome is pretty predictable,
Their problem is that by being as oppressive as they are, the Modern world and attitudes become more and more attractive to their dissenters. And the dissent grows and grows and the Right's need to become more and more anti-Modern intensifies in response. So it's an ugly learning curve to fair-minded people, but by clinging more and more tenaciously to power the reactionaries are forcing their end to come by attrition, then to go into catastrophic breakdown.
I'm optimistic and I see the political breakup of the Right coming before real economic misere. But it's going to be a close call, and it's going to take some hard work on our side to bring enough moderates full of dumb mental obstacles and bad information across the political divide.

They have designs on crowning a world king later in this century. Yeah, it's a sick coloring-book fantasy. But that doesn't mean they aren't deadly serious about it. And the likes of Rev. Moon and his money are fomenting it every step of the way. There is nothing more dangerous than a mob with a vision.
I say we need to pay very close attention to these people, particularly the LaHaye/Moon devotees and the Pat Robertson club. Differenet ideologies, but the same theocratic dreams of a world under the boot of some Christ proxy.

32. it will self-destruct imho |
|
It looks to me more like the NDSAP takeover in Germany than the Stalinist regime in Russia, which means it may escalate, become more and more absurd and then self-destruct in a maelstrom of violence and hatred and depravity. As you point out so well, there are deep internal contradictions in the fascist theocratic movement popularly known as the Republican party.
The tyrants expropriated the Republican party label, and cobbled together an alliance of corporations and theocrats as an expedient to gain power. As most of us who are close observers know, that alliance is quite flawed and based on fantasy and lies to the point of ridiculousness and absurdity. Regardless of whether people are Christians or not, Republicans or not, or conservatives or not, they have been conned and lied to and misused, and the tyrannical regime will show them no loyalty once their usefulness has been exhausted. We make a mistake, I think, when we see the threat as ideological or based on any principles. It is merely the age old story of megalomaniacs grabbing absolute power and wrecking a society.
