Identity theft---Social Security number |
|
Remember when your Social Security was NOT GOING TO BE USED for other purposes?
Remember when your SS number was as private as your underwear?
Remember when you were warned to protect your SS number?
I think those that conned us into one all purpose number should pay when our numbers are misused and our identity stolen? That would be nice?

1. It said right on the card |

"Not to be used for identification". The idiots who changed the rules should have to pony up money to cover the thefts that occur because of the rule change.
Not only that, but it wasn't necessary to apply for a Social Security number until you were old enough to be employed.

2. Recently I had reason to call my power company. |

The nice lady said "Your social security number please." I said "I am not giving you my social security number." She said "Doesn't matter we already have it." I say "If you already have it then why do you need it?" She say "To prove you are who you say you are."
We debated for a while and she allowed I could use a code word when dealing with them instead of my SS number. I did not ever give them my SS number-never. Where did they get it?

I had to call the cable company recently related to a service issue. They wanted the last four digits of my SS number. I gave it to them. They told me that wasn't my social security number! I've known my SS number by heart since I was a freshment in college. I know damn well what those last four numbers are but this twit insisted that I was wrong. This went on for five minutes until I finally demanded to speak to her supervisor. Suddenly she decided that she didn't need my SS number and could process my service request. WTF?
