Family Values group gets upset over "sex store"(FL)

By Cathleen O'Toole
First Coast News

O'NEIL, FL -- They came without song or chants. Instead their hands grasped firmly to a message, one they want to make quite clear.

"Pornography and sex shops in general are bad for the community," says Rick Young, who's leading up the demonstration at a new store in Nassau County.

They say now that Adam & Eve has come to town, crime and other troubles will follow..."

3. This guy's sign pisses me off.

In case you can't make it out, it says Porn Contributes to Child Abuse. I'd like to see some numbers on that. Though if you want to get specific, alcohol contributes to child abuse as well. I wonder if this smarmy little fucker is going to protest at the local bar later on.

I bet not.

4. I hate sex shops like I hate Walmart. But as long as there are no
dildos in the front window, I can deal with one or two in town. We have an issue in our town with a topless bar/dancing place. I really hate the thing and when I drive by it reminds me of the seedy underbelly of society. If there were more than just the one it is possible I'd participate in an attempt to get them to move outside the city limits. And I'm not a prude.

6. Why?
Why should the rest of us have to live according to the guilt that some people have about sex?

Makes no sense.

10. LOL. I didn't think I was going to get away with this!
I don't have guilt about sex. I have a belief that if you want to spice up your sex life, you should do it with items you can find around the house! Really, that is basically it. But to go further, I think of the window display in such a shop the same way I think about nudity: it's great, it's natural and it's unavoidable, but pu-leeze don't make me have to look at yours unless I really like you!

You drive by the titty bar and see nothing. You see the neon and glitter and shit and that's it.

15. OK
As long as everyone is respected but why get upset over a strip club? Just don't go. Vote with your money.

If you mention that children maybe influenced, you relaly have to look at how you are raising your child.

17. Somehow I think that the toys we sell are a bit better than
what you are going to find around the house. Don't think you're going to be able to build yourself a rabbit vibe with duct tape, an old coke bottle and your pager (in vibrate mode of course!)

Really, have you ever been to an upscale sex store? The kind without the peep show booths? You might be suprised at the fun stuff you'll find.

Another thing I'd like to throw out here is that some women cannot orgasm without mechanical assistance.

I clerk in my store about 50 hours every week. Most of my customers are middle class couples who come in looking for some fun and excitement, whether it be in the form of a movie or a toy.

27. As a matter of fact, I have not ever been in an upscale shop.
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 06:08 PM by kiraboo
I am only familiar with the ones which I have to hurry my kids past before they ask any questions! If the store looks "brown paper bag" benign from the outside I don't mind. Otherwise, I do. As for whoever referred to how I'm raising my kids, the answer is: "Well. I'm raising them well."

9. Actually we didn't win.
You are a prude. There's nothing wrong with a goddamn titty bar. If pervs want to look at naked women and women want to show their fun bags and pussy, why are you so involved?

This goes down to freedom of speech and expression. Children aren't allow into the fucking place. So, what's the worry.

12. "I'm not a prude"

How gracious of you. You're not a prude, you just don't respect the right of people to buy a dildo, or enjoy adult entertainment. And FYI, no adult store puts dildo's in their front windows. It's called diseminating material harmful to minors and carries a jail sentence.

Adam & Eve stores are some of the most upscale, tastefull stores in existence.

5. Dirty times for dirty minds...
How exactly do they figure "crime and other troubles will follow"?

Answer: they don't figure, they just associate it in their own dirty minds.

7. SIGH!!!!
We are far too conservative when it comes to sex in this country. These groups are forgetting the major problems in America and focusing their efforts on getting rid of a sex shop??? What about protesting cigarette companies for distributing products that kill. What about protesting neo-nazi groups for distributing racist charged Cd's to our high school youth ON SCHOOL GROUNDS. My point is that there efforts would do a greater good for a greater number by focusing on what is the real danger in this country. We need to drop our archaic views when it comes to sex in this country. Haven't we seen with the child abuse scandals in the catholic church that a lack of sex is dangerous to the human Psyche. The religious rights' "ethics" war on sex is laughable when you look at the impact on AIDS, the failure of the flu vaccine, and racism in this country. God fearing Americans are taking rights away from people and throwing this country in a religious cold war. On a side note the store owners decision to put up that sign welcoming the protesters was sheer brilliance. I hope they turn garden hoses on these friggin wackos. PEACE -Grant

...considering Gannons rep and all, I would certainly imagine fetters could have been involved.

...just saying.

19. Why not in your neighborhood?
My store is in the worst part of town, because I have been turned down by every other landlord in town.

Since I've moved in here, both prostitution and drugs have decreased. I keep a good eye on my lot, and run these people off. I am a positive force in an otherwise dying commercial district.

16. I have a problem with the sex shop in town...
...because it used to be the toy store that my children and I used to frequent.

My five year old doesn't understand why she can't go in there any more. I've explained that it is no longer a toy store for kids but she insists it still is because they have dress up costumes in the front window.

Welcome to small town northern Ontario! :hi:

21. That is too funny!
You could bring your 5yo into our store, but not in the back room. Actually, we have a few couples who do bring their kids in with them, then take turns going into the back room. Most people do leave the kids in the car though.

Occasionally, I end up watching the kids - I put them on a stool and we watch their parents shop on the surveillance cameras (you can't really see any merchandise in the monitor).

22. Nope...
...they won't let her in. It's against city ordinance to allow children under the age of 18 in.

At least, that's what the mayor said at the ribbon cutting ceremony. :eyes:

23. That's why I have a back room
and a front room where I only sell clothes.

If I didn't, I would be an adult store and be zoned out of existence. As it is, I'm a lingerie shop with a back room.

20. Many people in this country have a lot of hang-ups about sex.
And It causes a lot of trouble. I firmly believe the anti-abortion people are more against the sex involved that causes pregnancy, than they are in "protecting children" (cause they don't seem to want to protect them after they're born.)

They want sex education to be about not having sex. How much sense does that make?

They think sex is only for pro-creation (like a necessary evil) when almost any anthropologist would say otherwise.

The tiresome fundies also seem to think somehow they have the right to tell other people how to run their (private) lives.

24. Coincidentally,
I was pornographically imposed upon just yesterday.

I checked my mailbox and the mail hadn't come yet, but there was a folded white piece of paper. Usually that's someone advertising for yardwork or such.

Surprise.

This time it was a picture pulled off the internet of three way lesbian sex, apparently chosen for the one woman's ability to do a split while almost standing on her head.

Usually our seven year old checks the mail. I'm glad i did it this time.

We live about two blocks from a jr high school and dozens of kids pass by on the way home each day. My guess is some 13 year old got a much appreciated gift from a friend at school, fell instantly in love, but wasn't ready to introduce his mom to his new found sweetie, so he ditched the picture where he could.
