Fundy psychos (anti-gay zealots) to picket John Edwards speech.
Pam Spaulding of Pam's House Blend has obtained a copy of this flyer distributed by Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church, expressing their intent to picket a speech by former vice presidential candidate John Edwards Mar 4.

The Westboro Baptist Church has repeatedly traveled to picket against gay rights and gays, including the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a gay student who was beaten to death in the late 1990s in Laramie, Wyoming. They have also rallied to celebrate Shepard's death and the death of another gay man, Scotty Joe Weaver, who was murdered in Alabama in 2004.

2. It seems to me that the right wing is moving toward that church's style.
It appears to be close to their end point of all-out hatred and in a few years the right wing will "mature" to that end. They are being emboldened by Bush** & Co and the media who claims "God and Christian values" are winning the political battles. One of the steps toward fascism.

3. Fred Phelps is such an @$$wipe!
His stupid followers must not have full-time jobs to find all this time to waste.

6. Where is the speech taking place?
If I lived nearby, I'd organize DUers and others to go counter-protest the x-tian fascists. Believe me, the signs I'd make would REALLY piss off the fundies. :D

7. I think it is best to ignore Phelps. They love the attention and will
protest anything.

8. Can you believe this insane nutbag actually printed that God killed
John Edwards son as a warning to him about supporting gay rights? This guy deserves to be taken down fast and hard. I really have a hard time believing that even he believes rhetoric this extreme. I suspect it is just red meat to his followers to get them to pony up more funds to support him. Scratch beneath most religious zealots and often you find a crafty businessman.

9. One of the best ways I've heard of to handle the Phelps 'klan' ...
is to come up with a pledge drive where supporters can pledge money for each minute the Phelps-bots protest with the money raised going to an organization Freddie definitely wouldn't support (or to whatever group, church, organization he's protesting).

Such pledge drives have been used successfully in a number of communities where Freddie shows up and usually receives as much, if not more publicity than Fred gets.

10. Just once. . .
I'd like to see 10,000 people march on HIS "church" and surround the place and scream so loud that he couldn't even give one of his hatefilled sermons.

Or better yet, why not start a fund for a statue of HIM entering HELL, purchase the property across the street from his church, and erect the damned thing right there where his whole congregation could see it every time they board their hate bus?
