Should Congress be elected for life - just like judges ?
Watching a little of the debate on C-SPAN about what to do in case of a disaster in the House, such as many lose their lives, etc.... They seem to think they are so important that the country could not survive if they were somehow not there in Washington protecting "our" interests. so we would need some special laws in case something bad were to happen. So, why don't we just pass a law tomorrow and let them stay up there until they die or resign? No more elections. Save all the time and money spent listening to their bullshit in their campaigns. Most of them win automatically anyway. Why not give them the job for lifetime? What would we do without them?

2. actually
there's a good reason to be concerned about this. It's not that the individuals themselves are so important in case of a crisis, but the BODY is. We'll need a congress to pass laws and allocate money in the event of a major disaster.

It has nothing to do with the individuals, but rather the constitutional obligations put on the Congress itself.

3. No, electing Congressmen for life would
cause too many small planes to crash.

4. They don't wanna do it for life
They only wanna do it until all their kin and themselves land good paying jobs in corporations for the evil chores they do in Congress.

Think of Congress as an internship for flunkies trying to break into management. The Coprorations ARE the management of the US now.

5. If I didn't know you I'd think you were serious
Unfortunately, a lot of people would probably be OK with what you've suggested, especially if there's another horrific attack on this country.

9. That's not true. In many states, they're elected.

11. Are they elected for life in any states?
In Pennsylvania, they are elected, but they must run for a retention election every 10 years. This a simple up or down vote where votes decide if they should remain in office. There is mandatory retirement at age 70.

In Texas they are elected to a fixed term and and must run for reelection.

Does anyone know of any states where judeges are elected for life?

12. I should have clarified. The ones that are there for life are appointed.
The ones that are elected will eventually have to be re-elected.

8. I think there should be term limits. That would get rid of
old fossils like Strom Thurmond, who shouldn't have served beyond the sixties. Unfortunately, it would also retire our good representatives, but I guess that's the trade off.
