Why doesn't the MSM report Guckert? My letter to TIME Magazine
Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 06:34 PM by Tiggeroshii
I wrote a letter to TIME after learning from http://www.americablog.org/ that their white house correspondent told BBC the story was juicy, "it has everything. ," yet they failed to write about it in any recent edition of TIME magazine. There was an editorial in the LA Times recently,

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-op-tent6mar06,0,1401921.story?coll=la-news-comment-opinions

And I don't think that will make them budge either in this matter. I think what newspapers and magazines need right now, though i'm not certain, is encouragement by their readers. If they get enough people upset about the fact those issues aren't being covered, maybe they will budge if enough people bug em about it. Here's my brief letter to TIME Magazine:

"To the Editors of TIME MAgazine,

I've been reading over the last month about the recent scandal concerning James D Guckert who made it inside the West Wing every day under the pseudonymn of Jeff Gannon. I have been astonished from the information I have received concerning the issue: Not only is he a male prostitute but his credentials did not meet the standards required of that as a privileged White House Correspondent which he was treated as. Not only has the Internet reported 24/7 about this issue, but 6 Senators(including Kennedy, Reid, Durbin, Lautenburg, and Kerry) all signed a petition asking the White House to investigate. According to the BBC, your own White House correspondent, James Cooper has even described the story as "It's the kind of thing that gets people writing." "It's got everything that gets the gossip going." This isn't only a juicy story, but it is one of greater importance to your readers and it is something we all have a right to know.

Whether or not it hurts the Bush administration, we as citizens have a right to know from the mainstream media such as yourselves what is happening. Not only is this a threat to the morality and common good of our people, but also an abuse by the administration and a threat to mainstream credibilty. The Constitution assures freedom of press, but when you are not responsible in your reporting(as you seemed to do very well during the Monica Lewinsky scandal), we as a people are desrted and see the mainstream media only as a submissive, 4th branch of our government -assisting the Federal Government in all they can benefit.

Please do your part and cover the Guckert story as soon as possible.

Sincerely, Colin"

So if you agree with this cause, I suppose you could write your own letter as well! Do your part, please! ;)

2. Jamie Coomarasamy (BBC, March 6): Is the US media too political?

Is the US media too political?
By Jamie Coomarasamy
BBC Washington correspondent

The American media are well known for having journalists who are open about their political allegiance.

But recent cases have opened the debate on whether partisanship in the media is going too far.

The Bush administration has already come under fire for paying commentators to espouse its views.

And now journalists themselves are questioning whether their profession is being undermined.

Once again, if one wants to know what is happening in America, one needs to turn to the British press.

5. Good idea -- here's mine

"Why hasn't Time fully investigated how Jeff Gannon got into the White House and was able to ask ideology-motivated questions of President Bush and Scott McClellan, his Press Secretary? And why hasn't Time looked more deeply into the Bush administration's propaganda efforts: to wit, paying at least six "journalists" to push the administration's viewpoint on issues? I cannot understand why Time is not taking the Bush administration to task for the Social Security Administration refusal to comply with Freedom of Information Act requests for information about its use of public relations firms - such as those that funneled taxpayers' money to the likes of Armstrong Williams. Please don't expect me to read your magazine, since you are failing in your duty to get to the bottom of critically-important issues.

BTW, welcome to DU! Good to see another activist-minded DUer on board. :hi:
