AP: Clinton gave up plane's bed to Bush on tsunami tour

NEW YORK - On their tour of tsunami damage in Southeast Asia, former President Bill Clinton (news - web sites) once allowed his predecessor, former President George H.W. Bush, to sleep on the plane's only bed while he stretched out on the floor.
The government plane in which the presidents toured the disaster area had one large bedroom and another room with tables and seats, according to an interview with Bush in this week's Newsweek.
Bush, 80, said Clinton offered ahead of time to give the older former president the bedroom so he could lie flat and avoid paining his body. Clinton, 58, decided to play cards in the other room that night.
The next morning, Bush said he peeked in and saw Clinton sound asleep on the plane's floor.

5. The thing you have to keep in mind
The thing you have to keep in mind is can you imagine the media uproar if he hadn't done this and besides no matter what you think of the old sob he IS 80. Clinton's mama taught him to respect his elders even if they are old bastards like GHWB.

6. Exactly
or even if they had each slept half the time in it, the RW press especially would be lambasting Clinton.

recently had major heart surgery. His actions speak volumes!

25. Exactly!
I just think that speaks volumes about the quality of President Clinton's character. He is a gentleman through and through.

One of the things that impresses me about him is that he does not appear to be a bitter man.

After all he has been through, with the Republican Party calling him everything but a child of God, he would have every right to be a bitter and angry man.

But that's not the impression I get of him. God Bless him.

He could've easily said no to the tsunami thing and did his own thing with someone else or just on his own. God bless him!

..... Kerry spent 10 days with the families of Mass. firefighters who died
in a terrible accident. Not one word in the press.

Clinton telling bush that he will play cards and then slept on the floor ......

Wonder if Rush or Fox is going to cover this?

31. What a bunch of crap
Clinton just went through heart surgery while that old fart HW still manages to hurl himself out of planes at age 80 (I am sorry but to me that is moronic...esp with all the elderly just hanging on trying to pay their medical bills or eat in this country)

I would have let the bastard sit in a chair.

Sorry to beat a tired joke, folks, I like him tons, but don't feel the need to forgive that part of his legacy.

Here's a thread trajectory, not to piss anyone off, but who thinks he's still scamming with chicks, now that he's out of public scrutiny and his wife lives in another city?

37. The Clintons are always kind to opponents.
The story doesn't surprise me a bit. Remember how Clinton thanked G.H.W. Bush at the inauguration in 1993? Hillary Clinton escorting Newt Gingrich's mother on a tour of the White House? The Clintons receiving Jesse Helms at state dinners, despite all the openly hostile (and even threatening) things Helms said? That's what they do.

It's funny how the vindictiveness of, say, a Tom DeLay or a George W. Bush doesn't get much play in the press, although I understand both Texans are given to revenge and grudge-holding. I apologize to any Texans on this thread who object to be in any fashion connected with DeLay or Bush.

He respects his elders, whether they're evil repukes or father of evil repukes, it doesn't matter. Besides, he did this once before I believe when he was the President. King Jordan Hussein's funeral, I believe, he gave up his bed in Air Force One to let either Ford, Carter or Bush have it. I don't remember which took it. I can't understand, though, why there weren't other twin size beds in an aircraft that large. And a lot of those first class eats are quite roomy.

39. Here's my question...
George Bush Sr. seems to be in excellent health for his age. He still jumps out of airplanes, for crying out loud. So why didn't he INSIST that Clinton take the bed, considering Clinton's current recovery from major heart surgery?

Right after Clinton's library dedication, Time Magazine had an article called Raindrops and Reconciliation. And it said that a lot of people at the dedication were concerned about how frail Clinton looked, including Bush Sr. It said Bush Sr. even mentioned his concern to Clinton himself, and Clinton told him that he was having a normal recovery, but it would take time to get his energy back.

So if Bush Sr. is really that concerned about the Big Dog, why didn't he insist he take the bed?

The Bush bastards don't have a gracious bone in their bodies. That's why. It didn't even enter the asshole's mind that Clinton just had heart surgery. The BFEE are self centered SOBs. :grr:

41. So true!
It's all about them, screw everyone else. They couldn't even provide a bed for a man who, just months ago, had his heart stopped and put on a bypass machine?

That's just amazing to me.

And you know, I don't like to make generalizations about entire groups of people (i.e. "all Republicans are") but I think that story just goes to show the fundamental difference between us and them.

When Ronald Reagan was buried, and Nancy Reagan broke down as she got ready to leave his coffin for the final time, I cried as I watched it on tv. Not because I was a fan of Reagan. In fact, I couldn't stand his politics.

But I cried because when I saw Nancy break down, I didn't see or think about politics at that moment. All I saw was an 80-something year old woman grieving for her husband, and I thought about my great-grandparents.
