Is the VRWC linked to the CIA?
I don't usually like to post what people might consider tinfoil. But, when I started an investigation and I came up with something kind of weird.

CIA-Weyrich
According to author Russ Bellant, FCF's Paul Weyrich has been involved the organization in the WACL, CIA covert actions, and support for Eastern European Nazi collaborators.

Weyrich-Robertson
One of the groups the FCF endorsed is the Christian Coalition, led by Pat Robertson. Robertson and the CC have been active anti-gay agitators. It uses homosexual scenes to demonstrate the moral decline of America, and it has acted at every turn to defeat gay-rights initiatives. Its fundraising letters and newsletters frequently utilize anti-gay fear-engendering images.

CIA-Scaife
Scaife was encouraged by CIA agent Frank Barnett to begin investing his fortune to fight the "Soviet menace." (18) From 1973 to 1975, Scaife ran Forum World Features, a foreign news service used as a front to disseminate CIA propaganda around the world. Shortly afterwards he began donating millions to fund the New Right.

Scaife-Weyrich
One of the Free Congress Foundation's most generous contributors is Richard Mellon Scaife, the man responsible for funding much of the get-Clinton movement. In 1997 the Scaife Foundations gave Free Congress Foundation $1,670,000. This was, by far, the largest grant of all of the Scaife Foundations for that year.
Richard Mellon Scaife has a long history of funding the Free Congress Foundation. For instance, Russ Bellant, a noted New Right researcher, indicated that by 1988 Scaife was the top lifetime donor to FCF, with a total of $7,014,000.

CIA-Robertson
Pat Robertson's Operation Blessing's international operations have coincided with covert CIA destabilization efforts in several countries.

What do you all make of this?

I have what I consider to be a very controversial file which links the Christian Right to the CIA. Perhaps it is time I completed it and shared it with the world. Keep in mind, I don't think the entire agency is to blame for any of this. I do believe though that there might be cells within the CIA. It's very possible since we don't know everything about it.

1. The entire VRWC seems to trace back to the CIA
I hate seeming tinfoil as much as you do, but this conclusion is becoming inescapable.

Perhaps the largest single source of the the New Right was Young Americans for Freedom in the 60's. YAF was founded by William Buckley -- who'd served as a CIA officer in the early 50's, part of the time under E. Howard Hunt, later of Watergate fame, with whom he remained close friends. Buckley's National Review may also have been a CIA front -- certainly, it published many articles by people with CIA connections.

One one hand, the entire duplicitous direct-mail fundraising business began with Richard Viguerie, who was YAF's executive secretary in the early and middle 60's and responsible for managing their mailing list. On the other, any number of YAF alumni went on to be involved with such groups as the World Anti-Communist League, the American-Chilean Council, the Council for Inter-American Security, and the American Freedom Coalition. Most of these same people and groups were also linked to Reverend Moon, who has his own intelligence connections by way of the Korean CIA. And old YAFers like Bruce Eberle seem to keep showing up even today whenever there's right-wing dirty work afoot.

There are also some very interesting connections by way of the Knights of Malta, several of whose members (like William Buckley, James Jesus Angleton, and William Casey) were also CIA. One member of the Knights of Malta, Schick razor king Patrick J. Frawley, bankrolled the founding of the Christian Anti-Communist Crusade by Australian evangelist Fred Schwarz in 1953. This group is interesting as an early intersection of conservative Catholics, Protestant evangelism, and reactionary politics. Some of the same people who belonged to it were later in the various CIA/Moon-related groups I mentioned above.

Two other figures of interest are General John Singlaub and Ray S. Cline, who'd served together in the OSS in China, along with E. Howard Hunt. They were then both in the CIA, and also had connections with the World Anti-Communist League. Cline became a major supporter and advisor of George H.W. Bush. Singlaub led the World Anti-Communist League in the 80's when it was the major conduit for covert Reagan administration aid to the Contras.

I'm very far from having sorted all of this out. Among other things, I don't know where the CIA was actively involved and where these various groups were just going on momentum. But it seems absolutely incontrovertible that the CIA played a major role in the growth of the right at two significant junctures -- one in the early-mid 50's, and the other during the Nixon and Ford administrations.

What you have is not at all weird -- and it's only the tip of the iceberg.
