Rep Dingell and 20 other Dems Slam Ann Coulter for her racism
http://clips.mediamatters.org/pdf/dingell_coulter.pdf

asks for an apology for her "serial anti-Arab bigotry".

says of Coulter
"if not for her venom she couldn't come up with enough words to fill a classified ad, let alone a column."

1. Mixed emotion about this
On one hand, if anybody ever richly deserved to be criticized, it's Coulter.

On the other hand, I hate to give the flaming witch any publicity of any kind.......

10. Can you imagine having to live
in that incredibly ugly little world she creates for herself and her fans?

That is the worst curse I can think of for any of them, and it's the one they all embrace willingly.

No amount of riches can compensate for the lack of joy.

4. This a good step.
There are people on the right who need to be "outed," in a way. Their statements fall well outside what any responsible news organization should tolerate.

I'd like to see our leadership call the media on it, frankly. No one's going to change the minds of evil people like Coulter, but she and her ilk should not be granted air time/print space in supposedly "mainstream" media over and over again.

5. This is stupid
By asking Ann to apologize all they are doing is giving her more attention. She likes this. Everyone needs to act like she doesnt exist.

21. She's a prime example of the media's extreme RW bias.
Can you think of anyone on the left that has so little to contribute to the national debate yet still gets the air time she does? Is there any raving lunatic left wing equivalent to her? Is there is any person on the extreme left calling for violence against the right that gets any kind of MSM air time? The answer is no on all counts. They are considered nut cases or part of the radical fringe. There's no need to give air time to nut cases or radical fringe kooks unless they happen to be right wing nut cases or kooks.

8. Actually, this is a good idea
Edited on Mon Mar-07-05 12:06 PM by Tempest
Karl Rove has made it clear he wants to improve the Repug's image with minorities, particularly Blacks. They've even gone as far as set up meetings between Bush and conservative Black leaders.

By pointing out Coulter is the kind of person who represents the GOP, they are driving a wedge between the Repugs and minorities.

On edit:
In hindsight, they're not so much as driving a wedge as they are preventing defections.

20. We shouldn't ask her to apoligize.
She won't and she is an attention whore and will love the publicity. Asking her to apologize ends up giving her more attention and more money. I think it may be a good idea to ask any newspapers that run her columns to apologise or any news programs that run her. That is unless they run a left wing wacko like Ward churchill to counter her nonsense.

23. Ask the newspaper's to apologize?
That's the same as shooting the message and not the messenger.

Annthrax wrote it, Annthrax should be the one to apologize for it.

And anyway, the newspaper's who ran the story changed "Arab" to "dyspeptic", so they have nothing to apologize for.

24. I mean only the newspapers that are biased.
I have no problem if a newspaper carries Ann, as long as they carry someone to balance her. My newspaper carries her column, but they dont carry a left wing wacko to counter her.

About asking Ann to apoloigize, Its like asking David Duke to apoligize. She wont apologize and it only gives her more attention.

27. The more attention the better
The more people who see Annthrax for what she really is the better.

I live in the most conservative part of California, and they stopped running her columns sometime back in the conservative paper because of her vileness.

They didn't apologize for running her columns, but they did make it clear why they wouldn't run them any longer.

We should be asking ourselves who's buying her hate speech. That's the problem. Her books sell. We have to accept we live in a hate filled society to do anything aboout it. So much for right-wing family values. Expose them for the hateful bigots they are.

11. Who's buying her books?
Richard Mellon Scaife.

He has a three car garage full of rightwing author's books, and probably several rental spaces full of them.

Any time you see a conservative author's book on the NY Times bestseller list, especially Annthrax's books, look for the (b) after the title.

The (b) means the book is being sold in bulk orders.

22. currently, there have been bulk sales of Men in Black and God's Politics
I'm wondering who is buying God's Politics. You wouldn't think the right would be. Is the left doing some bulk buying too? Anyone know?

(Men in Black appears to be a hit piece on the US Supreme Court for all the wrong reasons...the book thinks the Suppremes are too easy on terrorists and giving out civil rights.)

25. Only two non-conservative books that I can remember having a (b) after it
There's only two non-conservative book in recent memory (the last year or so) that was being bought in bulk, Jon Stewart's "America" and Bill Clinton's "My Life".

"America" had a (b) only after it had been at number one for several weeks. And the (b) only appeared for one week, it was gone the next.

Clinton's book didn't get a (b) until after it had left the bestseller's list. The bulk orders put it back on the list months later. Usually when bulk orders are received for a book after it leaves the bestseller list is because of library and educational institution purchases.

And yes, I follow the NY Times bestseller list weekly. Don't ask me why, it's some kind of compulsion.

17. My question is
why do supposedly legitimate news organizations, with decades of giving Americans factual news from reliable, hard-working newspeople, now feel that giving Coulter visibility is justified? Would Edward R. Murrow or Walter Cronkite give Ann airtime? Are we going to be subjected to KKK members and extremist fundamentalists on the nightly news? Is no one vetted anymore? Are there no standards at all? Coulter is a rabid froth-at-the-mouth hater with little credibility and no scholarship. Her only draw is that she's outrageous. She provokes. She's the Jerry Springer of political commentary. (and he's much more informed and intelligent).
So...why does Brian Lamb have Coulter on his show? And all the others?
They should be ashamed. They've lowered the bar. On themselves. And they wonder why we hold them in such low esteem.
