I read DU instead of the New York Times now - |
|
It just struck me. Over the past four years I've stopped consuming paper. I read just as much, but it's here. I cancelled my subsciption to the NYT. The magazines still arrive (New Yorker, Vanity Fair), but I rarely read them. I don't read much anymore on paper. I'm on the internet. Mostly at DU. And I feel better informed than everybody else.
Is this the future?

1. The Arts section is worth reading. But you can do that online, of course. |

I got one too many nasty responses from the NYT's "Peoples' Editor". some day I'll post the one about "Gannon" I got while we were breaking the story and the NYT was denying it.

3. Me too- and instad of paying the NY Times... |
|
I sent money to D.U. and truthout.org. They need it more and I trust the news they report far more then I trust the NY Times these days.

4. It probably is for news. |
|
I still get Harper's, and I still read it. I still get The Nation, and I still read about half of it. Other than that, if a magazine that's written for people to read (rather than scan while they're in the john taking a shit) and they have an interesting cover story, I'll pick it up.
I don't bother with the right wing fishwrap. I don't bother with the slick "news" magazines, and I haven't had the nightly propaganda hour on since 11/2/04. I find that I'm quite a bit calmer now that I'm not having to shriek "liar!" every five minutes at some bland talking head spouting administration nonsense for the masses.
It's just a lot harder to deal with people who are still in the lala land of believing in a free press that is telling them what they need to know about their country.

That's the only time I buy it, when I know I'm going to have the time.

8. I will briefly scan other news sources... |
|
...but I rely mainly on DU for my news.
I am sickened by the NY Times. The Times was the paper of record. We could count on the Times to be even handed and to seek the truth.
However, that's no longer the case.
Judith Miller's "articles" were criminal.
When the NYTimes finally goes under and journalism textbooks tell the story--those Miller stories will be the linchpin of the tale.
The Miller stories were one of the most egregious ethics violations in journalism history.
I'll never forgive the Times for that.
Anyway, they've never asked for forgiveness in a way that reflected the enormous devastation that those articles thrust the world.

10. Judith Miller and David Brooks |

The NYT sold its soul when it hired Brooks.

9. The newspaper information model is dying. |

I do miss it for starting fires in the woodstove, though.
