Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 03:08 AM by jdj
for chasing down a woman with a Bush bumper sticker.

She called 9/11. Apparently he pursued her for a while.

Poor guy. But quite dedicated.

I'll look for a link

Political road rage
Nathan Winkler

By:De Anna Sheffield

South Tampa, Florida - On Tuesday evening, Michelle Fernandez was driving down Armenia in South Tampa with her two children in the car, when another driver tried to run her off the road. The man had a sign over his passenger window that said 'Never forget Bush's illegal oil war murdered thousands in Iraq.'

Fernandez has a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker on her car. Fernandez called police from her cell phone when the driver began yelling, blowing his horn, and following her.

Joe Durkin, Tampa Police spokesperson
"When we contacted him, his indication to the officers of why he was upset, was because he says 'the victim flipped him off, and that's why I pursued her.' But this is taking political views to an extreme."

Winkler is now charged with aggravated stalking and road rage, which carries a five year sentence

apparently this happened tuesday night, this is the first I've heard of it, there's a photo of Winkler at the link

6. I live in Tampa and the story was an interesting one.
This is what happened:

While driving, man sees Bush/Cheney bumpersticker on a lady's car.
He beeps his horn.
She then gives him the finger.
Man starts chasing her down.
She accuses man of "stalking" her and calls 911.
Rest is history.

Gee, guess I won't be "keying" any Hummers any day soon.

I SO want to do it, but I do believe in Karma.

45. Why bother
Why bother keying Hummers. Just be satisfied that they're overcompensating personalities will drive them into bankruptcy and with the new bill they'll be screwed.

I know how you feel though. Every time I see one of those fake Chevy's with their plastic Hummer bodies I wonder how many wars we'll have to fight to keep their tanks full. Don't get me started on Co2.

This came in late last night and was reported in a local paper somewhere. I don't remember where. It's late. I'm very tired. But CNN is late in reporting this story. From what I read in the article there are massive holes in the story. This lady seems to be lying. Hyperbole maybe. Who knows? Anyone notice the conflict in her story? This lady is a flipping gawd awful liar. Oh what the hell... Goodnight.

33. Because it was a PARTY member being harassed by an Enemy of the State
Naturally, if the reverse happened (and it does every day) that would not be news.

After all, it would only encourage Enemies of the State to air their false grievances against Loyal, Godly PARTY members on Corporate TV Pravda.

Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 03:39 AM by magellan
But it was silly of Winkler to follow this woman at all. The road is no place to be engaging in political discourse of any sort. The number of times I've noticed an SUV or 4 X 4 in my rear view mirror, and suddenly it's gunning past me and squeaks in front of me -- purposely and dangerously -- revealing the 'Support our Troops' and 'W' stickers...I know it's because they saw MY stickers and couldn't deal with being behind a dayum libruhl. I make sure they see me -- a woman -- laughing at how pathetic they are when they check their mirror for a reaction.

Ain't no way I'd take on an Ugly Rethug and their need to over-compensate for their lack of brain mass, not when I'm in control of a moving vehicle.

Edited for clarity

smelled like exaggerated, overblown bullshit.

I figure she made some of it up, like the part about him trying to run her off the road.

my father was driving my car with its "Worst. President. Ever. W" bumper sticker on it and he says he was stopped at a red light when the guy in the car behind him got out and came up to his window and started lecturing him about Bush and the bumper sticker. My father still drives well, but he is in his 80s and didn't even know what the guy was talking about. It is sort of funny to think of that stupid freeper wasting his breath on some guy who didn't even know what the hell he was talking about, but I do not at all like the idea of this creep having harassed my father.

Interestingly, this Hate Group, the World Creator Church, now known as the Creativity Movement, led by Matthew Hale (KKK) uses a similiar logo:

Even if the repuke nitwit did flip him off, he should've kept his cool.

I had a similar situation (but in reverse) happen to me last summer - a Chimp booster started harassing me about my anti-Chimp bumper sticker and followed me off the interstate. I made the mistake of stopping and it almost erupted into fisticuffs.

I hope Nathan gets help for his anger...:(

20. They were *both* Democrat
but she voted for Bush. There are a few of those around here, but more Republicans who voted for Kerry actually. Here in Pinellas where we have many more Republicans than Democrats, Bush and Kerry were virtually tied.

Here is what this lady had to say:

"I respect him for having his beliefs and feeling so strongly," Michelle Fernandez said Wednesday night, her nerves still frayed. "But here he is protesting the war and lost lives, and he is going to put me and my children in danger? This man has a serious problem.

21. Its probably all bullshit
I highly doubt that she was a Democrat who voted for Bush and had a Bush Cheney sticker on her car. Its just something that Republicans like to say. They do it all the time.

And, while I wasn't there and don't know for sure what happened, I don't think she is telling the whole truth. And it woudln't suprise me at all if she were lying to make what he did seem worse than it was.

38. Sounds like this guy was way out of line
He apparently started the whole thing by honking at her and pointing to his anti-Bush sticker (I really doubt if it was a friendly little 'beep'). She flips him off - the exact response I would have given - and he starts chasing her. She may be exaggerating the 'running off the road' bit, but who knows? It's definitely scary when people start chasing you, so she could have been genuinely terrified and perceived a real threat.

My verdict: she may or may not be a harpy, but Winkler is a Grade-A jackass.

I've seen Bush fans hassle people they perceived to be liberals on several occasions. Not just following them or shouting- I'm talking about actual vandalism. I've seen this sort of thing 3 times on the roads, always coming from the conservative, but I've never read a news report about it.

"Crazy liberals" seem to have no trouble making the news.

43. good, sort of.
the baby boomers can still (vaguely) remember the days when this nation had a real militant left. but my generation, and those younger, seem to equate leftism (and "liberalism") with "pussification". anything which challenges that assumption right now might help, a bit.

it's not good for the most important national needs, political and otherwise, to be associated with weakness.

is like waving a gun. It's really stupid. I think an adult should always say, "What can I gain from this?" BEFORE they do something stupid. When I encounter crazies on the road, I laugh and wave and then keep my distance.

I can't see the up side of anything else, except if they are in extreme violation of the law, and then there are cops for that. It's not just the fight, it's picking the right fight. I go with Walt Starr on this one.

Besides, this is so much more important than pillow talk between someone high up in the White House and a male prostitute who got through security every day for two years using a fake name and got within a couple hundred feet of the President.
