Voting your conscience when it's just symbolic is one thing.
Voting your conscience when that effectively means stopping a piece of BushCo agenda is entirely another.

...with Stevens for Alaskan support of the Hawai'i Indigenous Peoples Bill (that name might not be correct). This looks like a real case of "I'll screw my constituency for you now if you'll help me later," without regard for the broader implications of screwing EVERYONE'S constituency. Louisiana, on the other hand, is simply owned by the petrochemical industry.

Power is consolidated in the executive branch. The legislative branch is just their tool. Those aren't 100 independent-thinking individuals in that chamber. It's all a trade.
