Moral Dilemma: Would You Work for a Freeper Station? |
|
Seriously, I need a job desparately and there's a PR/writer/producer position open at a local freeper talk station. Would you try for it, if you had no other bites, or pass out of principal?

I have a friend who used to work for the broadcasting group and he says they're asses. I understand that, because of the business, I am essentially temporary anyway because they have frequent firings.

3. Oh, the things you could do! |

You can't say 'no' to the job if you don't apply for it.
Go for it.

4. could you insert some progressive ideas or at least some |
|
moderate thinking into the writing?
If you approach it as an opportunity to influence ideas on the right wing programs, it could be a noble endeavor.
However, if they edit all your stuff to match the neocon agenda, you probably wouldn't be very happy there.
You need a job. Give it a shot. Maybe you can help open some eyes.

I always feel that freepers aren't all bad people. They're just under the spell of really bad ideas.
And we're all under a spell that claims no common ground. What bull. We've been divided so as to be conquered.
On so many levels, many are just as disenfranchised as we are.
Find out what bugs them. Things they'd never say to a lefty, etc.
But leave if the place freaks you out!!

17. I left reporting (newspapers) too |

Went into marketing and have gotten laid off twice in two years (my former dean of students warned me when I asked for his advice upon my career change that marketing jobs ALWAYS go first to save sales staff - he was right). I'm considering an office job with employer paid-for health bennies (family, included) just to stay away from the muck.

I've been pretty desperate for a job before myself, so I'm not going to make a quick judgement. Times are hard, I know, but have you exhausted all options? Could you take a job somewhere else that pays less? If this job is all there is out there, then I can see where self-preservation would have to take a front seat.

Not starving, but worried about where April's rent will come from. I worked for years in insurance, but here, banking and insurance are being shaken up due to a big merger, so it's a poor job market. I've sent countless resume's over the past four months and have had no luck with any of them, even with headhunter agencies.

You'll be kicking yourself if you can't pay your rent while knowing you might have been able to.

10. Are the radio hosts/owners famous, or even semi-famous for the area? |
|
In which case, take the job, keep your head down and your ears and eyes open, and always carry your cellphone w/camera with you. If you have a little tape recorder, keep that in your pocket, too! You just could find yourself with a swell story to pass on to a newspaper, a competing radio station, the local news, or a blogger! Who knows, you just might discover that "Mr. Morality" is having a fling with someone he shouldn't.
If the job is too onerous, you can continue to look while you suffer there.

heh.
You could be quite, how shall we say, subversive.
Or at least a reasonable voice among the koolade drinkers.
G'head. Take it. Just try to steer them toward at least objectivity if you can. Even that would be an improvement.

13. Pass on it. If you interview for the job, they're going to suspect... |
|
...your liberal "bias". Even if you get the job, you won't last long because one day you'll stand up and let them have it for being the rightwing pinheads that they are.

18. You do what you have to do to take care of you. |

I've just gotten laid off and am considering an office job to pay the mortgage. I also have a smallish mouth to feed. Perhaps you could be a mole, as suggested, or stay there long enough to have them fire you for your progressive ways and earn some unemployment. Unfortunately, in the Bush economy, you sometimes have to lay with the fleas (the dogs are running the government) because it's hand-to-mouth these days. Good luck, solin! (I'm a former newsie, myself).

19. I worked in freeper talk radio for 10 years. |
|
I'm no longer employed in broadcasting at all. I couldn't take it anymore.
With that said, you may find that the majority of people who work for these stations are a lot more liberal than you would believe. The station is in business to make money and thats what drives them.
The biggest problem I had wasn't with my co-workers, but rather the audience, some of the scariest people in the world listen to talk radio. I actually remember being worried for my safety for a while. I praised Clinton on the air and as a producer I had Planned Parenthood on as guests a couple times. The listeners went completely nuts. I also remember calling the Secret Service a couple times about one of our listeners who kept threatening Clinton.
So if you don't have to deal with the public you'll be fine, if you do, prepare for some interesting times.
