For Evangelicals A Bid to Reclaim America
http://abcnews.go.com/US/CSM/story?id=583652&page=1

<snip>

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., March 20, 2005 — For the Reback daughters, the big attraction was the famous Ten Commandments monument, brought to Florida on tour after being removed from the Alabama judicial building as unconstitutional. The youngsters — dressed in red, white, and blue — clustered proudly around the display.

For more than 900 other Christians from across the United States, the draw at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church last month was a national conference aimed at "reclaiming America for Christ." The monument stood as a potent symbol of their hopes for changing the course of the nation.

<snip>

This just turns my stomach. They want to return to the founding fathers' view of America. Gawd that is so ignorant.

Here is one great article on the subject

And here is a great thread from right here at DU with some awesome links

I don't know why these people anger me so but they do. I suppose it is their self-rightousness and lack of coherent thought that drives me nuts.

3. What's this "RE" claim shite?
When did evangelicals ever "have" America.

The most demented aspect of the conservative ideology is the notion that they're aiming to "go back" to some more pristine time. America has always been a wild, variegated place. It has always been a steaming and deliious cauldron of sex, violence, profanity, excess, indulgence, pornography, atheism. It has always been awash with ethnicities that enliven and transform it. It has never been a pure land of Jesus-ry, or the fake goodness they attribute to the deadening life of "traditional families" and "market values." Never.

Their golden age dogma is a farce and a fraud. It really signals their perceived loss of white, male dominance, which has indeed faded, though it was never as total in its application as they imagine. The underlife of America was always far more productive and interesting than the upright life of these fucking wankers: their upright life is not a culture of life, but a hatred of life, in the Nietzschean sense. They are the ascetic priests of American culture, with their reserve, their so-called decency, and their scared, broken little bodies.

Reclaim? Naw, man. They ain't never had it.

4. They want to bring back a glorious past of national unity
Like Mussolini wanted to bring back the Roman Empire

Like Franco wanted to bring back the Baroque Spanish Empire

Like Hitler wanted to bring back a mythical Teutonic unity
