Why Does The New York Times Allow Itself To Be Plagiarized?
(cross-posted at http://whyareweback.blogspot.com )

Jeff "copy-and-paste" Gannon has an interview in the magazine of today's copy of The New York Times. In the interview, Deborah Solomon refers to Jeff's "reporting" and his "career in journalism" even though he's nothing but a lowdown, dirty thief.

All of Jeff's stories that I've read (about 150 so far) were stolen from either press releases or from real news organizations, as my regular readers have learned from the countless articles I've written about it over the last month-and-a-half. Even worse, Ms. Solomon allows Jeff to get away with saying, "I had submitted some opinion pieces to Gopusa. I believe they were picking up wire feeds, and Bobby Eberle wanted to supplement that with original reporting." What fucking original reporting? There wasn't any at Talon News. Why the fuck won't the Mainstream Media report this?

I sent an e-mail to Sheryl Stolberg of The New York Times a month-and-a-half ago telling her that she'd been plagiarized and there has still not been one fucking word about it in the fucking paper of record or anywhere else in the mainstream media.

Yet she sent me a response the very same day which recognized the theft!!!

Two weeks ago I wrote her again and told her that I was going to post on this blog the contents of those e-mails.

But I can't do it. Because I'm not an unethical bastard like Daniel Okrent and because I never do such a thing unless I get permission. Plus, Ms. Stolberg ignored the last e-mail I sent her (in which, heh, I told her I would). If Dick Cheney writes me a personal e-mail admitting to sending that letter to Senator Daschle in 2001 I might break that rule, but I've wrestled with this for the last two weeks and I just can't do it.

But anything that I write I do reserve the right to post:

From: "Ron Brynaert"

Subject: You've been plagiarized

To: stolberg@nytimes.com

I just posted an article on my blog ("Why Are We Back In Iraq?" at http://whyareweback.blogspot.com )that relates to PropaGannon - Jeff Gannon and Talon News.

It concerns another Talon News "correspondent" by the name of Steve Roeder who completely ripped off an article from the New York Times and Fox News on the very same day. Here is the URL link for the story...which I call "Fake Ass Talon News" but you can call it whatever you want : Fake Ass Talon News

Excerpt:

You might want to change that last sentence on the About page to Talon News filches stories from other media outlets. Mr. Gannon is not the only plagiarist on the staff of the Talon News. And it's not just the White House who's words are being lifted. Talon News also cribs from The New York Times and Fox News.

Just after the 2004 election "results" were officially certified late Thursday afternoon on January 6, 2005, a report by Carl Cameron, Julie Asher and Jim Mills appeared on the Fox News Website: link On January 7, 2005, the article - "Congress Ratifies Bush Victory After a Rare Challenge" written by Sheryl Gay Stolberg and James Dao - was published in The New York Times (excerpted at this cache link), although it most probably was available at The New York Times Website sometime late Thursday evening. On Friday, Steve Roeder, a "correspondent" for Talon News "wrote" a practically identical "article" called "Dems Fail in Ohio Electoral Vote Challenge" which is (how do you delicately put it?) practically stolen (Steve Roeder from Talon News is a plagiarist):

Roeder - "A joint session of Congress resumed proceedings Thursday evening and quickly ratified President George W. Bush's November election victory."

Cameron, Asher & Mills: "A joint session of Congress resumed meeting Thursday evening and quickly finalized certification of President Bush's 286 Electoral College votes to Democrat John Kerry's 251.

Roeder - Certification was halted for the majority of the afternoon when Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) stopped the formal declaration process.

Cameron, Asher & Mills - The certification was delayed for several hours after Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, D-Ohio, stopped the formal declaration of Bush's second term to protest voting irregularities.

Roeder - Boxer said on the Senate floor that she and Jones wanted to "shed some light" on issues of reported voting irregularities in Ohio and nationwide election reform.

Cameron, Asher & Mills - Boxer said on the floor of the Senate that she joined with Jones to "shed some light" about the issues of reported voting irregularities in Ohio as well as election reform throughout the nation.

Roeder - Lawmakers were forced to retreat to their separate chambers for two hours of debate and a vote on the challenge.

Stolberg & Dao - Instead of holding a courteous joint session to certify the election, lawmakers were forced to retreat to their separate chambers for two hours of debate and a vote on the challenge.

The following line appears on the Talon News Website: "Copyright © 2005 Talon News -- All rights reserved." Tell that to Fox News: "This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. Copyright 2005 FOX News Network, LLC. All rights reserved."

peace

One more thing, if Sheryl Stolberg never told her employers at The New York Times about the theft of her work that they own the rights to, then she deserves to be fired (heck, she deserves to be fired for her crappy propagandistic writing, anyway).

READERS: Please leave a comment at http://www.whyareweback.blogspot.com that includes your own personal theory on why The New York Times and the Mainstream Media will not report on the rampant plagiarism of real news organizations (let alone...sue the hell out of Bobby Eberle, Jeff Gannon & company) so that everyone I write at The New York Times tomorrow (and other organizations that purportedly care about issues such as this) can see it when they read this post.

3. ha
I let Ricky off the leash since I started focussing on this over a month-and-a-half ago.

Every now and then I check his Bill Clinton Daily Diary blog...he did stop asking for the donations...and he seems to have gone even more rightward in it...which should show obviously fake it is but a lot of people still don't seem to get it...i left a comment there about 3 weeks ago but he deleted it a couple hours later...but it does seem more satiric...so it's almost..almost defendible.

he stopped his new democrat blog

hey...at least ricky wrote more original stuff than anyone at talon news...he stole shit and violated fair use...but he didn't really plagiarize anyone...

but he's small potatoes...this is bigger fry....he still visits me from time to time...i get lots of hits from people when they google any of his blogs

at some point...i might try to find out what else he's been up to....he did threaten tas at http://www.loadedmouth.com but he's just a twerp

5. would have to guess
that it was a rather lame threat.

It was amusing to watch - especially his multiple personalities.

Maybe ricky was just a warmup for chasing down things on Gannon  good work.

2. I expect that writers are being told what to write
and they do not feel they own it. Newspapers are probably glad they are being plagerized so they can tell the RNC about how effective they are in the propaganda effort.

6. You really wanna know my theory
It's hinted at it in the comment i left first.

Because they all do it too.

Same reason why many bloggers won't mention it.

Then there's also the fact that so many people don't seem to know what plagiarism is...or how it relates to the fair use act. Afterall, theft of ideas is also plagiarism...but there is a grey area where news exists.

Not citing a source that you get the story from is also plagiarism and nobody seems to give a shit about that much on the internet.

But many of the articles that I've written that document the plagiarism at Talon News including articles "written" by Jeff Gannon show complete sentences and/or paragraphs completely copy-and-pasted with no source cited. That is plagiarism in anyone's book.
