If you make a mistake, or appear to, you are dogshit to many at DU... |
|
no matter if it is Jon Stewart, Bono, Bill Maher, Tom Harken, or fill in the blank, there is no room for any to stray from the flock on any issue. It doesn't have to be a "pattern" of deception, it only has to be one "betrayal". But is this good? Sooner or later, we will look around and there will only be you and I. In my opinion, we should not be so quick to vilify those that we know are on our side. Just meant as constructive criticism. :)

As much as I may like a lot of U2's music, Bono is a huge sacred cow who deserves to be made into hamburger occassionally.

I don't post here to be voted Most Popular DUer. I have been "attacked" many times, and my reaction has usually been "so f%#king what?"
Although I myself have overstepped the bounds of good taste and Democratic solidarity, I work diligently to support people with whom I disagree on particular issues, as well as my "friends". It's the only way to be involved in political action, in my opinion.
And gawd help us if we ever turn on each other.

in fact, I was recently called "Mr. Congeniality", for not being very congenial I suppose. Although I've kissed and made up with the original poster, it was still a badge of honor.
People love factions. We love to belong to groups and to claim that OUR group is right. So it is sad that within DU there are self-proclaimed arbiters of Absolute Truth who are so willing to give us the mighty We in their opinions, and claim that anyone who doesn't agree is a freeper.
Personally, although I shouldn't admit it, I do get some malicious fun out of pointing out that sticks and stones . . . do not make me a freeper.

Many kids, especially boys, love to fight, even if the fighting is for play, or based on "symbols" like plastic soldiers.
I don't think that's all too bad, but adults tend to lose sight of the Big Picture, and it's especially true among progressives; the conservatives accept the need for aggression and combat. Although it leads to disastrous political programs, they have better solidarity because they deal with in-group aggression better.
Or maybe my brain has sprung a leak again ... any con/divergent ideas?

the idea that if a lot of us believe the same thing, it must be right, and if you don't believe exactly the same thing, you must be excommunicated. I usually find that people who spew that way are talking-point-repeaters anyway, and not original thinkers, and we certainly have as many on this side of the fence as on the other.
Not a very liberal/progressive way of thinking, but very human.

Unfortunately,I think it is the nature of the beast. People who have an avid interest in things political have strong belief systemsare very opinionated and outspoken about it. I don't think it is true of the majority here, but there will always be the few who tend to be harsh first and ask questions later.

Once I even met David and Julie (Nixon) Eisenhower at a Republican function in small town Northern CAL while I was in high school. I found myself face to face with the daughter of "The mad bomber of Indochina"; Now that was scary!

15. Well as I said about Harkin earlier |
|
Edited on Tue Mar-22-05 11:25 AM by Bluzmann57
He voted in favor of the Schiavo bill, but he is a man of faith, who is commited to the rights of the disabled. His vote didn't match the thinking of some here in DU. But as an Iowan, I am proud to have Tom Harkin as my Senator. He does a novel thing, he actually tries to look out for the people of Iowa, which is where he's from, as opposed to the other way around. In other words, he gets it. He was elected to represent Iowa in the U.S.Senate, and chooses to put Iowans first often times. I just wish our representative here in the first district did that. And if that is the only "mistake" Harkin makes, then there is nothing wrong with him at all. After all, he, like all other Americans, has a right to his opinion, whether one agrees with them or not. Interesting thoughts btw Kentuck. We need to have disagreement every now and then. It keeps the lines of discussion open. on edit-I may get flamed for this, but I think U2 is way overrated. Bono got mentioned, so I just thought I'd throw in my two cents worth.

It foolish to expect everyone else to agree with you on everything. It's immature to think in limited "black vs white" terms. We have to allow people to have different opinions on various topics, without seeing them as our enemy.

having a different opinion is seen as "making a mistake," and the fact of the matter is that there are many issues on which reasonable people can disagree.

it seems like there really have been some "plants", if I'm understanding your use of the word. It's just a trust issue.
Last night there was a big ol nasty thread that got pulled, and probably a couple of disruptors got kicked out, too. It deserved to be pulled because it was so obviously going against the spirit of DU.
But then, there are people who do a fairly innocent thing such as defend Nancy Grace, then fur starts flying.

We are mostly a forgiving lot. Although I don't know the details of your "transgression", most of the time, comments that are in disagreement witht the "force" are ridiculed and mocked, but are not "usually" cause for banishment unless it is downright "traitorous" - as in defending Bush and/or his policies quite vociferously.
