Nationwide interest raised case to federal level, Thune says

Argus Leader

published: 03/22/05

Both of South Dakota’s senators and its lone representative are on record in support of an extraordinary law allowing a federal court to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case.

But Republican Sen. John Thune was the only one who discussed the issue when contacted Monday.

“I was for it,” Thune said.

Congress had not dictated what the courts should do, just allowed them to take another look at the case, he said.

“I’m not sure I know the right answer on these life-and-death issues,” Thune said. “The only thing I would say is, I think that you always want to err on the side of life.”
