My first and LAST Terri thread.
Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 02:44 AM by mordarlar
I detest this subject. I have posted on it against my better judgment, in other threads, because i am in the minority here and i feel the other side is also worthy of consideration.

It needs to be said that I BELIEVE this should be between the family members and the state courts ONLY. The recent actions of our government have made me incredibly angry.

Since this is such a popular topic, it has been difficult to keep my personal view quiet, as i would normally do. I have watched this case from a distance for some time and some concerning issues remain.

Prior to this becoming such a hot talking point, i had formed the opinion that Michael Schiavo is extremely suspicious but that the court would make it's decisions and that would be that. Terri is not my sister, mother, grandmother or daughter and therefore the outcome of this case was no more my business than the time it would take to read an article.

I recently responded to a post and felt the info there was worthy of at least some consideration here. I realize it is not the popular stance but that has never mattered much to me. I make my mind up based on what I FEEL is right.

Edited to add... it is Michael's intention to have Terri's remains cremated.

Three of Terri's friends on Greta Van Sustren.
http://www.penraker.com/archives/001370.html
>>>GRETA: Jackie, Did Terri every discuss her relationship with Michael with you?

JACKIE: Um, she was unhappy in her relationship. She was talking to me about moving out, um, she wanted to get an apartment with me. We discussed where we would live, furniture, um because I was married at the time, we were both going to move in together, and just start over.

GRETA: Did she express what was the unhappiness in her marriage to you?

JACKIE: Michael was very controlling. She was not allowed to go anywhere after work, she had to go straight home after work. He would monitor the mileage on her car, and on the weekends went we went anywhere, he would want to know where we were going and I would be the one that would drive all the time. Not that that was a issue, but , um, he would always find some excuse for him to have the car.

And

GRETA: We are joined by Terri’s friends - Jackie Rhodes, Diane Meyer and Joe Shannon. Diane before we went to break I asked you about the marriage between Michael and Terri. Can you describe it for me, specific incidents?

DIANE: Well, I think Jackie brought up a good point when she said that Michael was controlling. I can tell you this, that was pervasive at the beginning of their relationship.Michael controlled….

GRETA: What do you mean by controlled?

DIANE: He systematically eliminated anyone from her past that wasn’t a Schiavo. He surrounded her in the Schiavo - I call it “clan” They… she only went out with Schiavos, when she was up here. and systematically, you know, myself, her other friends from childhood from Pickwell, were all cut out of Terri’s life. The way messages that were left for her weren’t received, uh left for her, weren’t received. Uh, and she felt we were not talking to her. And he could shoot her a look, and she would shutup.

GRETA: Jackie, any suggestion that the relationship every got physical between, in a physical abuse way, between Michael and Terri

JACKIE: I did notice bruises on her upper arms and upper legs. But I just contributed those to maybe running into a desk at work, or maybe she was extra sensitive, but now, hindsight tells me that I did see them quite frequently, and that they may have been more than just a bump into the desk.

GRETA: Alright, you didn’t see anything, no black eye, or anything like that, no facial bruises, correct?

JACKIE: No, they were mostly bruises where normally they would be covered up, you know, during the workday. Maybe by a skirt.

GRETA: What kind of, how were they, were these bruises like someone bumped you, or someone grabbed you? I mean is there, obviously you’re guessing but …

JACKIE: They were smaller bruises like maybe someone had grabbed her. Or you know, like squeezed her arm or leg really tight.

And

GRETA: Jackie, I wonder what people are saying about this where you live now?

JACKIE: I get calls all day long because I’ve made it clear that I was friends with her, and you know, not all the media has told the whole story, and I’ve been sure to tell them that you know, Michael and Terri were talking about divorcing at the time, um. She was not happy in her marriage, and she wanted out, and I don’t feel it should be Michael’s decision to have the feeding tube removed. I think he should give up her right, his guardian rights, to her parents.

GRETA: Diane, did you ever hear Terri mention whether she wanted to be on prolonged care of any kind?

DIANE: We had a discussion, which I testified to in the trial in the year 2000. About Karen Anne Quinlan. In which Terri made it VERY clear to me, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that she did not approve of removing Karen Anne Quinlan from the life support. Her quote was exactly “Where there’s life, there’s hope” THAT’s Terri. That’s what people need to know. There’s only three people in the world who have heard her say anything different. And they’re all named Schiavo. All her friends and family will resoundingly tell you, that is not her character, to say that she would not want to be on life support, and to put her family through this.

GRETA: Alright, Jackie, Diane, Joe, thank you all. <<<

1. Dr. William M. Hammesfahr is a discredited quack.
Some of the others you cite have been shot down in the court proceedings.

What's your point?

4. Yes i am aware that anyone who speaks differently than the popular talking
points here is often deemed a "quack".

I am sure there are "quacks" on both sides depending on who you talk to. I figured some people might like to read what the "quack" has to say. So MANY "Quacks", so much reading material. I READ BOTH SIDES to form the clearest picture. Others may wish to as well. Have a good evening.

11. You did great work hunting down Gannon pics
You didn't stop looking into it until you'd driven to a library, risking safety, to get the truth.

Why would you not look into the quackery of this doctor.

The problem is way to many people are Feeling this issue instead of Thinking.

For someone that spent 2/3 of your post trying to sound reasonable you really bent over backward to look like a quack in the last third.

She is joined by many in her claims, "incredible" or not. I do not automatically discount "incredible" as it seems Judge Greer does.

As for the first link, a misstatement regarding a recommendation (commonly called a nomination) someone made on his behalf for the Nobel Peace Prize does not confirmation or deny his MEDICAL ABILITIES.

I just think it is so sad that if she dies she has had like judges running in and out of her room. And what about the video? Whats with that? Why don't we have one that is from last month. And will her family be allowed to be near or are they not allowed to be there? I don't know. I don't know.

Personally I think if you do not know the intentions.. you cannot pull the feeding tube. But that doesn't help this case does it?

One thing for sure. George Bush is one asshole. I look forward to Bush being responsible for every cherry-picked right to life issue thrown at him ...from today until the end of his natural life.

28. Honestly, i have little issue with feeding tubes being removed....
when a person has not eaten in a long time their body tends to stop creating hunger pains. The feeding tube bypasses this system.

My issue is that i am NOT convinced this would have been her wish. But like i said in the original post, it is not necessary for me to be convinced.

But if harm had come from Michael's hand, i can think of no greater betrayal of Terri's rights than to allow this man to have any say in her life. Either in petitions to the courts on her behalf or as her guardian.

8. APFN = American Patriot Friends Network
They're an extreme right-wing operation.

Jeff Rense is also a member of the Terri Schiavo Exploitation Club.

It is no crime to be disposed to want Terri's feeding tube re-inserted, and to overrule Michael Schiavo's decision. But backing it up with material from a source like APFN is hardly an act of dispassionate analysis.

If you are a liberal, no matter what your opinion is on the subject, it can't be denied that the Religious Right has turned this into a public circus for its own benefit. The fact that they are failing badly bodes well for the Republic.

As for Terri, I don't think that most of them could give a rat's ass about her. They are exploiting the Schindlers' pain as well as Michael Schiavo's. They are without shame, without scruples, and without ethics.

If you are inclined to praying, pray for Terri Schiavo. Because most everybody else who claims to be praying for her are preying on her.

Edited to add...BOTH SIDES have turned this into a circus.

14. Why Should It Send Up "Red Flags", Ma'am
That only extreme right wing sites circulate the documents provided by the side of a case supported by right wing zealots and right wing money?

Do you imagine that because a document is part of a case in court that that means it is prepared by the court, or reflects the judgement of, and conveys the endorsement of, the court? These are simply the things pressed by the side of the case which lost in court, and will continue to lose in court. You provide none of the documents amd pleadings presented by the side which prevailed in the case. Why?

42. They Lie By Ommission, Ma'am
They present these as truths, when they have been discarded by the trial court as inferior to the presents of the side which prevailed. This means they are, by compare to what the other side presented, they are merest rubbish and scrap paper. They are not "concealed truth" but merely discredited pleadings in a cause that lost, and presenting them as anything but the latter not telling, and attempting to conceal, the truth. That is a very common means of distortion, and one the old Birchites in particular are past masters of....

When she dies and Delay launches the nuclear option against activist judges these same people will say it's our fault for not defending Terri.

32. well theres where we differ.
my dad was brain dead last year. there was nothing in his eyes and he was gone. my mother and i had him taken off of life support because it was his stated wish and because he was truly just a shell. 'dead' with Terri Schiavo here seems to be severely incapacitated. But she's home in those eyes, the lights are on, she's expressive enough to show she isnt a lifeless vegetable. That isnt dead in my book. her family loves and wants to take care of her, and theres no stated proof, just her husband's word she would wish to die. Who benefits from her death. Villifying her family as though they have no rights to care for their own flesh and blood? And barbarically starving her to death? Sorry but I have issues

44. Yes, you do have issues.
Your issues seem to involve not understanding the full extent of the damage to her brain.

Because she is looking around doesn't mean she tracks objects with her eyes (she doesn't) and it doesn't mean she has any awareness (she doesn't). PVS (persistent vegetative state) can be HIGHLY misleading to the rest of us, who have all of our brains.

Terri is NOT brain dead and no one here is saying she is. "Brain dead" and "brain damaged" are two different things. Brain dead means machines have to do EVERYTHING for the person, because NONE of the brain is functioning.

Terri's LOWER brain is functioning. That's the part that makes her breathe and her heart beat. It's the part responsible for involuntary, reflexive stuff. (You don't think "heart beat, heart beat" all the time, do you? No, it just beats!)

But her brain damage is SO extensive and SO permanent, it's absolutely catastrophic. She has NOTHING other than a beating heart and expanding and contracting lungs. None of "Terri" is left. Nothing that made her Terri is there.

YOU are projecting YOUR feelings onto her. She is a shell. No personality, no awareness, no consciousness, no thoughts (she CAN'T even form a THOUGHT in her head, but people think she can SPEAK???), she most likely cannot see or hear or feel any touch. If you hit her knee with one of those little hammers, her leg might kick (actually probably not because of muscle and bone atrophy, but whatever) but ONLY because that's a reflex movement, not a voluntary one. She can't decide on her own to even move her pinkie.

The brain tissue necessary for those things simply ISN'T THERE. And you cannot just re-grow it.

issue number one:

not thoroughly researching before coming to a conclusion.

the video you have seen is a minute or two of spliced video. 10 or so odd hrs of video. Seen commercials with animals or babies from before the age of CGI? They react like humans or adults do because of splicing. A third party guardian appointed to assess Terri Shaivo determined that her physical movements were/are a result of involuntary movements. She cannot swallow. She cannot follow an object. She does not recognize people or noises. She does not react to stimulus. Her brain is gone. Seen the brain scans? G O N E.

Her family IS fighting for her rights and her wishes. Her husband is at least. Her mother and father have testified in court that they would not pull the feeding tube, even if they HAD heard her express those wishes. They don't give a damn about their daughters wishes.

Cessation of nutrition and hydration are not barbaric. It happens every day by choice to a multitude of people. When it is a natural part of the dying process, and not associated with malnutrition, disease, and contaminated water, it is not painful.

29. It's amazing how many fear death
And are totally detached from the reality of death. I guess it's nice to live in a cocoon, but doesn't make for very good decision making. This is about legal processes and guardians making end of life decisions and nothing more. It's ridiculous to define anybody as cheering for somebody's death when all they're doing is accepting the reality that the woman would have been dead 15 years ago if not for human interference. Medical science is for healing, not dragging out the death process for decades.

30. There was no winner
Michael lost his wife 15 years ago as did the parents who lost their daughter. When she passes, they will all mourn again.

The repubs lost by parading her and using her for their own disgusting motives. The dems lost by standing by and doing nothing.

We all lost because the affect this case had on how our government operates and our right of self-determination is still at risk.

If there are any winners, I don't know who they are.

33. I'm not cheering.
I believe that both Michael Schiavo and the Schindlers have been yanked around, taken advantage of, lied to and about, and have generally been screwed by the law, the government, and their fellow citizens.

However, I am thankful for the fact that our judicial system works, and that Congress was not able to successfully intervene in such a private, emotional case. This gives me a bit of hope.

It's a shame that a woman has to die, but this kind of death does happen every day--it's just not every day that it's put front and center in our news. It is not cruel or painful for "Terri." I put her name in quotes because Terri Schiavo's spirit has not been on earth since 1990. Her brain has liquefied, and her body has deteriorated. This is a shell of a person. I am thankful that her body may continue towards rest, as her mind did fifteen years ago.

34. cheering that her wishes would be honored.
www.dyingwell.com gives really good perspective on cessation of nutrition and hydration as a means to death. It is a natural part of dying, many many people choose to do so, remain sentient and do not experience any pain or discomfort. She has no brain, she cannot feel pain. I told my husband and my mother I would haunt them if they kept my body going like this.

I do not cheer anyone's death. The circumstances surrounding her death are the 'cause'.

www.abstractappeal.com if you would like an unbiased source on the Shaivo case.

insurance company. he had a job. the company doesn't look like it files reports anymore, and seems like it was dissolved.

what do you think it is? I could be mistaken.

72. I understand what you're saying,
but all this evidence has been heard in court numerous times, and time after time after time, judges (who, presumably, know much more about the case than we do), found some question of quality of the testimonies of the witnesses and the case presented by the Schindlers. 22 different judges now say that Terri would not have wanted this for herself. They are a much better judge of quality than you or I. They have heard all this evidence and more, and still ruled in favor of the husband over a course of eight years.

Go here:

http://abstractappeal.com/schiavo/infopage.html

There's lots of court documents with reasoning and information, and this guy is unbiased--he does work for Court TV concerning the Schiavo case, and he provides lots of credible information (in the form of court documetns and testimonies in the Schiavo case) to back up what he writes.
