Al-Quaida setting forest fires in America? Anyone else hear this.?

I caught the tail end of an interview on TV where they discussed this. Have to admit it does seem like a pretty risk free way for terrorists to hurt america. Then again, maybe Rove is doing it and blaming al-quaida.

It would be too easy and too devastating to shrug off. Though I don't konw what can be done about it, in all honesty. Last year in New Mexico, they closed the national forests :( because of fire hazard. Even afterward, a guy was caught setting one, just by dumb luck in that a ranger happened to see him. Terrorists would be another matter.

If Rove would do something like that, well...*fantsizes evil people roasting in flames of their own making*

9. Colorado was shut down last year's summer too

Practically all the national forest land was closed to hiking and camping for 6 weeks or so. The great Hayman fire did a huge amount of damage - burned about 200 sq miles. More fires this summer though none have been real big. Had a decent snowfall last winter.

4. well, consider this....

1) as terrorism goes, this is pretty small potatoes.

2) fire is more often good for forests than bad (although admittedly wildfires do set the clock back a bit further than most natural fire regimes presumably do)-- the "dangers" are primarily to timber extraction business (not terrorism by any means IMO) and to people living in relatively remote areas. Again, not very effective terrorism.

Hell, if bin Laden wants to reintroduce fire in western forests, I say:

"Bring it on!"

Get real. Live in a western city in a drought for a couple of years, and then shrug it off. Or talk to a fire crew.

last year we endured the largest wildfire in colorado history, which came within a few miles of forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people in southwest denver.

if i was looking to terrorize people here (which reliably increases the republican vote) i would work this story. it was in the rocky mountain news this morning...

During WW2, the Japanese loaded incendiery bombs on balloons and attempted to ignite the forests in the Pacific Northwest.
Don't laugh, they managed to kill a picnic group who found one of the deflated balloons (with bomb attached) and set it off.
No serious fires were started.

Yes Virginia there are no terrorists in the USA.Its all in the mind.

And dont say 911 was "terorists" we YET have to see proof. Sorry.But for something of that MAGNITUDE, we NEED proof. Not some lying nose picking chimp and his pet poodles word for it.

Lets just take LA AIRPORT for example:

ANY TERRORIST driving on the freeways by the los angeles and john wayne airports and seeing those planes land SO LOW SO CLOSE (you can almost see the pilot in his cockpit) to the freeway and those houses and hotels by the freeway could pull out an M16 available in any gun store and empty the magazine and shoot at the pilot or engine or gas tank of a 747 plane down and drive away easily and the crash could kill hundreds on the plane and not a few dozen more innocent victims on the ground by the airport that is densely populated.Are we making sense?

NO WEAPON of MASS DESTRUCTION necessary. Just your user friendly M16 or one of those rpropelled grenades courtesy of the NRA lobby and the relaxed gun laws.

But thats besides the point.

The point is why hasn't such a terrorist attack of that sort happened? Why have we had NO TERROR ATTACKS ALL OVER THE heartland in almost 2 years?

Despite Ashcrofts daily prayers for something Spectacular?

Hint: Its not due to increased security.

Simply because there ARE no terrorists in our midst.

The terror in our midst is a myth.

The real terrorists are in Washington terrorizing US an unsuspecting allbelieving public.

Those planes landing in LA should be diverted to land from the sea.Its only a matter of time before some kook NOT terrorist gets this idea.We dont think we're the only people who drive on the LA airport freeway who get this horrible thought every time a plane swoops down so low above our car.If theres anyone whos in charge of zoning or whatever in LA and Orange counties who is reading this please see what you can do to divert those planes landing to both John Wayne and LA airports from landing OVER the freeway to landing from the sea ,so as to PREVENT a local kook or an even bigger spook like Rummy from using one of his thousands and thousands of stockpiled surface to air missles and doing something like this and then BLAME AL QUAEDA for it.

13. My son's a firefighter

There is no rash of manmade fires this year. In fact, he's only worked one week this fire season. There's been a few big fires, but so far, fairly quiet considering. I wouldn't worry about al qaeda fires just yet. Although we did talk about it last summer, it would be a really frightening event.

With all the fires and personally I don't believe it. They want to hit big visible targets: WTC, big cities, military bases, embassies and so on, not small towns out west.

Besides there's enough stupid people here, Al-Qaida doesn't need to help. The Rodeo-Chedeski fire here in AZ was started by a lost hiker. The drought here is bad. I can't remember the last time we had a good rain, but lots of dry lightning.
