I saw the BANNED "Postcards from Buster" show! |
|
You know, the PBS series where cartoon character "Buster" the bunny is "visiting" real-world people and observing what they do?
There is one episode set in Vermont where Buster visits a family that lives on a farm - but the family is headed by a LESBIAN couple. Oh, the shock! The horror!
A lot of PBS stations refused to show that episode under pressure from the religious nuts. Fortunately my local station (KTCA - Mpls/St.Paul) did not cave to pressure, and they played it a couple of nights ago.
Well, I have to say after watching it - BFD. There is nothing in it about "lesbian love" or anything like that. Just kids and women working on a farm and forming a family. But you see, THAT'S what the homophobes fear: potraying gay people as no different from the rest of us. They are so full of hate it blinds them.
It was a good episode, I learned how they make maple syrup and what life is like at their farm.
Screw the religious reich.

I posted this before, so here i go again.
I work for Vermont Public Television, and obviously we decided to air the episode featuring our own state. We received a letter from the governor(R) and signed by the legislature that applauded us for making the controversial decision to air the episode because it helped teach tolerance/acceptance and diversity(as well as the process to make maple syrup - which is called 'sugaring', where do you think the term 'sugar shack' came from)

watching that program made me think, "Hmm, living in rural Vermont looks pretty nice." And considering it was filmed in that early part of spring before anything has greened up, that's saying something about the beauty and community of your state. Good call on making sure it was shown!
