Question for the Terri death crew: |
|
Is it compatible to believe in the promise of stem cell research, and yet at the same time believe that Terri Schaivo has no hope?
If you believe in research, you must want Terri to have a chance at a cure that might be close. And if you don't believe in a cure, does that mean you don't have faith in stem-cell research?

1. Do you really think we will be growing brains any time soon? And if so |
|
will she still be Terri if we grow her a new one? Or will she have to start from scratch with a whole new personality and learn everything all over again?

|
whereas any meaningful treatment for Terri Schiavo is exceedingly beyond our grasp. We aren't even within a million billion miles of being able to grow new brains. You are comparing apples and oranges.

Err, stem cells will almost certainly NEVER be able to grow a fully functional, complete brain. That's just plain stupid. And even if somehow, miraculously this were able to be accomplished, you might as well just CLONE Teri since a new brain means it won't be Teri.

The reason Terri Schiavo's feeding tube has been removed is because it was determined by clear and convincing evidence that she would not wish to be kept alive in her present condition.
Why is that so difficult to understand?

12. They could rush stem cell research and manage to build her |
|
a new brain from the brainstem on up, but it wouldn't be Terry Schiavo when they were done. Everything that carried her memories and her personality is GONE. They'd be left with an infant's brain in a completely ruined body, and how compassionate is THAT?

13. Who knows - maybe stem cells would have helped 15 years ago |
|
but even if they regrew a brain for her it would be a brand new brain like a newborn. Would it be ethical to put it in the body of a grown woman who has been immobile for 15 years?
We need to research stem cells so that if someone has a similar health crisis maybe stem cells can help before 15 years have gone by and it's far too late.

Well, your post title is insulting, so you're off on a bad foot from the start.
Then we get into how far away stem cell research is to actually helping someone in Schiavo's condition.
Then we get into the dozens of roadblocks that have been thrown in the way of stem cell research by the very people who want to 'save Terri.'
So, if you can:
1. Be less of a jerk in your thread titles;
2. Figure out a way to accelerate stem cell research by 20 years;
3. Overcome the House, the Senate, the White House and the Florida legislature to accomplish #2...
I will then take you seriously.

28. Wholly flawed premise |
|
First of all, I've not seen anyone argue that Terri must die for the sake of dying. What people are arguing is that her wishes should be carried out, that as the patient, she and she alone had the right to control her medical treatment.
So, the answer to your question is that it's immaterial, and just another red herring to distract from the REAL Issue here: Do we have the right to control our destinies, our bodies and our medical treatment? That has absolutely nothing to do with medical research.

29. Why Not Freeze Her... |
|
If we're gonna play whatifs, why not do a Ted Williams...slowly lower her body temperature and keep her in some Walt Disney cooling bin until medical science catches up with totally reconstituting brains and other great advances yet unknown.
In the meantime we're in a world of living and dead and must reconcile when a person is truly dead. Seems that is a question many have had to examine this past week.
I am a strong supporter of stem cells and the report of advances in this new science are encouraging, but to expect it, or genetic engineering to make such great strides anytime soon is living on false hopes. Plus before such breakthroughs become common and available I'm certain there will be years, if not decades, of pointed debate on the ethics of this issue.
One can't miss the irony of how the Repugnicans now claim "err on the side of life", yet fight against the stem cell research that could eliminate some of those errors. Hypocrites again.

30. "terri death crew" is an inflammatory ad hominem attack |
|
Other than that, the positions are not contradictory.
This is about recognizing HER wishes and that has been determined and affirmed.
Stem cell research in its current form is so limited as to PRECLUDE a remedy in the foreseeable future.
Frankly, it's more contradictory to believe stem cells will save her and pretend one is for a culture of life, since the same people claiming they are for a culture of life are the same people who limited stem cell research.

I think your premise is a bit flawed, to say the least. Growing a spinal nerve cell may or may not be far off. But growing brain cells and organizing them as a functioning human brain... I don't imgagine anyone in the field considers this "close."
