Minorities charged less than whites at college GOP bake sale |
|
http://www.woodtv.com/global/story.asp?s=3127009It was a bake sale that has media outlets and an entire college campus buzzing. That is because the baked goods were sold on the basis of a buyer's ethnic background.
The goal was to get people talking about affirmative action, but it has ended with a student group at Grand Valley State University in trouble.
The College Republicans in charge of the sale sold cupcakes to white people for $2, $.75 to African-Americans, $.50 to an Asian or a Hispanic, and a nickel to Native Americans.

1. It's time for us to hold a bake sale that reflects the GOP |
|
Average person pays $2
Rich person pays $0.01
Poor person pays $3
Religious Contractor - We give them $10
War Contractor - We also give them $10

You've made a very effective point. I'm sick and tired of the conservative "poor little rich white folks" blather.

6. It depends on what kind of religious contractor |
|
If said contractor believes in the true teachings of Christ ("Blessed are the peacemakers," etc.), charge them $5.
If abortion and Schiavo are all that matter, give them $25.

2. did any minority buy them? |
|
Or did they realize they were being demeaned and exploited? The whole premise of the sale is warped. Minorities DON'T get an equal chance for things, as this sale implies.

It seems I hear about this bake sale once or twice a month. Is this story making the rounds by itself, or do these baby 'publicans keep trying to sell the same moldy controversy?

13. I have heard about this story many times before... |
|
...and it has been mentioned at DU each time, I think. Well at least many times. For those doubting you, let me suggest that they do an archive search for tiered payment of baked goods and they will see for themselves how tired this story is.

14. actually i have heard libertarian/conservative viewpoints that |
|
government should not be involved in civil rights at all, and that market forces will solve all problems. In other words, it is ok to for rethugs to discriminate, and if you don't like it, you can boycott the business. So I suggest that student Dem's set up a table for whites only, and if non-whites don't like it, they can go elsewhere, ( having this all under the banner explaining that this is the conservative point of view).
